Chapter 06: Coming home from war and entering Hell
Jasper finally got word that his tour was up after 8 years of service, now he was on his way home to surprise Alice.
When he arrived at the airport in Dallas he received a surprise of his own: waiting for him was Peter and a woman who he assumed to be his new wife, Charlotte – or at least he hoped so. He grabbed his duffel from luggage claim and headed toward them.
“Brother, it’s good to have ya home.” Peter said pulling Jasper into a hug.
“It’s good to be home, but how’d ya know?” Jasper asked.
“Ma.”
“I should have known, that woman could never keep a secret.” Jasper laughed. “Does Alice know?”
“No. We wouldn’t of known either if we weren’t at Ma’s when ya called.” Peter told him.
“So, now Peter, is this lovely woman your wife or your mistress?” Jasper smirked taking Charlotte’s hand and kissing the back of it.
“Peter, dear, you didn’t tell me your brother was such a sweet talker. If I’d a known that I’da married him instead.” Charlotte chuckled.
“Oh, Peter, I like her.” Jasper chuckled at the deer-caught-in-the-headlights look Peter was sporting.
“Welcome home Jasper, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you, names Charlotte, but your family so you can call me Char.” Charlotte said pullin Jasper in for a hug.
“Well big brother, now that you managed to charm my wife, shall we go get something to eat I’m starved.” Peter asked after coming back to his senses.
“Sure thing Pete.” Jasper said throwing his arm around Charlotte’s shoulder and leadin her toward the exit.
“And get your hands of my wife Jas, you have one of your own.” Peter pouted.
“Yes ,but I think I like yours more.” Jasper said as serious as he could.
“Har-har… not funny.”
“I thought it was,” Jasper let Charlotte go and she made her way back to Peter. “So, where to oh starved one?”
“Ma’s.”
“Really?”
“Yep, on her orders: I was to pick you up and bring you home for a good home-cooked meal.” Peter said proudly.
“Well then, by all means brother – lead the way.”
The filed into Peter’s truck and headed toward the Whitlock farm. It took only 45 minutes, and by the time they were close Jasper was practically salivating to get inside.
“Chill Jas, I’m sure Ma made plenty for everyone.” Peter laughed.
“Yeah, well, I haven’t had a home-cooked meal in over two years… and Alice can’t cook nothin’ like Ma.” Jasper said.
In all seriousness, Alice couldn’t cook at all and if it wasn’t for Jasper’s Ma teachin him how to cook, they both would starve.
As soon as the truck was in park Jasper was out the door and running up the porch steps.
“Ma, I’m home!” he yelled as he entered into the house.
“Jasper, honey is that you?”
“Yeah, Ma.”
Jasper’s Ma came running in to the living room. She stopped dead and looked at him, a tear falling down her cheek. Jasper opened his arms to her, and not having to be asked twice, she ran into his arms. He pulled her close and kissed her forehead.
“I missed you so much… I was worried you weren’t comin’ home and then you called and I could have flown through the roof. Your brother was worried I lost my mind when he came in and heard me say you was comin’ home.”
“Well I’m home now Ma and I don’t have to leave again.” Jasper whispered into her hair as he pulled her close again.
Somewhere in the middle of this Peter and Charlotte walked in. Not saying a word they headed for the kitchen to help out setting up dinner. After a few more minutes of hugs and whispers they both headed for the kitchen to join the others.
After a delicious meal of fried chicken, biscuits, corn on the cob, stuffing and homemade apple pie, Jasper decided it was time to head home to see his wife.
“Ma, I have to go home and see Alice.”
“Alright honey, but be sure to come round tomorrow for supper.”
“Yes, Ma.” Jasper yelled as he followed Peter out to his truck.
The ride to Jasper’s home was silent with only the music on the stereo was heard. Pulling up in front of Jasper’s house, they noticed Edward’s car in the drive.
“He must be over to visit?” Jasper said.
“Yep, want me to help ya carry yer stuff in?”
“Yeah sure.”
Peter helped Jasper carry his bags into the house which, at first, seemed empty.
Peter silently set Jasper’s bag near the door and headed to the kitchen to grab them each a beer out of the fridge. Jasper, on the other hand, headed to where he figured his wife could be found. When he passed the living room and she wasn’t there, he headed toward the bathroom. Noticing no lights on, he proceeded to the bedroom. Not sure why Alice would have Edward in their bedroom, he slowly opened the door; taking a step in he wasn’t prepared for what he saw: there – tangled in his sheets, on his bed, in his home – was his best friend and his wife.
“What the hell is goin’ on here?” Jasper yelled causing the pair to break apart and Peter to come down the hall.
“Jasper, baby, it’s not what it looks like?” Alice cried wrapping a sheet around her naked body.
“Oh, so I didn’t just see my best friend fuckin’ my wife in my bed?” Jasper asked extremely to calm.
“Jasper man, I swear it’s not like that!” Edward tried.
“Don’t you even think of talking to me.” Jasper growled. “I want you both out of my house.”
Jasper spun on his heel almost knocking Peter over in the process. Peter followed Jasper back out to the kitchen where he had placed the beers on the table. They both to a long swig of the cool beverage. It wasn’t but seconds later that Alice was standing there.
“Jasper baby, please listen to me.” Alice pleaded.
“No Alice – I have nothing to say to you!”
“But Jasper, I love you – please don’t do this.” she reached out and grabbed for Jaspers arm. Jasper spun around as Edward came around the corner – just in time to see Alice lose her balance and fall backwards onto the floor. Edward, assuming that Jasper had hit her, flew at Jasper.
“Don’t you touch her, you ass!” Edward screamed as he connected his fist with Jasper’s jaw.
Jasper of course lunged back. The fight broke out from the kitchen into the rest of the house. Both men taking and receiving hits.
“Stop both of you!” Alice screamed from where Peter was holding her back.
They continued back through into the kitchen once again. Neither was paying attention to what lay on the ground at their feet. Edward tripping over Alice’s bag, fell backwards. It was like watching a train wreak in slow motion. Everyone could see that Edwards head was gonna hit the corner of the marble table top but couldn’t move fast enough to stop it. He hit the corner full force. Everything stopped.
Peter let go of Alice and she rushed to Edward’s side.
“No. no. no. no.” That’s all she was saying over and over again. Peter, at least, had the proper state of mind to call 911.
“Alice, I …” Jasper started.
“Jasper, how could you?” Alice cried.
“Wait, what? How could I Alice your the one that slept with him not me?”
The yelling began again and was still going when both the ambulance and cops arrived on scene. Edward was wheeled out and taken to the hospital – with Alice riding along. Jasper was cuffed and placed in the back of the cop car while the police questioned Peter. They decided to take Jasper to the police station.
“I’ll call Jenks, Jasper and we’ll have ya out by morning.” Peter yelled as they closed the door.
Watching as the cops took his brother away, Peter wasn’t sure if this was gonna work out for any of them.
