Chapter 08: Locked up

Jasper sat peacefully in the back of the police cruiser on his way to the station. He didn’t want to cause anymore trouble though he knew he was in the right since Edward had attacked him in his own home. He also knew the surveillance videos in his home would show the same thing.

Upon entering the station, they lead him to an interrogation room where he knew they were going try and pressure him into a guilty plea though there was no way he was going to confess to doing anything he didn’t really do. He had been through worse situations overseas so there was nothing they could do to him that would make him confess to something that didn’t happen.

He sat there for what seemed like hours before finally hearing some voices coming toward the room.

Peter entered first, quickly followed by Jenks.

“Jasper, are you okay?” Peter asked.

“Yeah, I’m just waiting for the never-ending questioning.”

“Well, I don’t see that happening tonight.”

“Why?”

“The interrogator they have for this station is on vacation until Monday.”

“What! You mean I have to sit in this hell hole until Monday?” Jasper was getting pissed off.

“Sorry dude, it’s the only option we have here.”

“Where’s Charlotte?”

“Outside waiting for her friend.”

“Oh great, someone else to know my miserable downfall,” Jasper whined.

“She may be able to help since she has a lot of pull in the legal world.”

“Oh, how so?”

“I don’t know for sure. I have never met her but she has worked with Char a few times and they have become friends over the two years you’ve been gone.”

“You have never met her? In two years?”

“I’m busy at the hospital and Char doesn’t bring her work home.”

“Okay, I guess…”

They hear raised voices from outside:

“Yo! Is anyone actually workin’ here or do you always just stand around wastin’ tax payers money?”

The three men chuckled loudly at the outburst from the front of the station.

“Well, I think that is our cue to head out; I have a feeling whoever is out there is gonna be a handful. We will get you out as soon as we can, but for now: keep yourself out of trouble.” Peter chided his brother.

“Yes, Father.” Jasper said while rolling his eyes.

Jenks laughed at the boys as he led Peter out of the room. Once Jasper was alone he thought about the voice who disrupted the quiet of the station. Whoever it was was definitely female and very irate; calling that out in a police station is probably the best way to get yourself a night in jail. Unless you had pull, and knew the right people. He wondered what had caused her to yell like that.

Jasper’s thoughts were soon invaded when an officer came in and lead him to a cell for the night. They asked if he wanted his phone call and he said no, that it was already taken care of. Jasper removed his over shirt leaving him in a white wife-beater and his fatigues. He was used to this since you didn’t often get the chance to change clothes in the desert, let alone take a shower.

Still, he couldn’t wait for Monday to come.

****Monday morning****

The days had passed quickly. Over the weekend, Charlotte had brought him food and his tooth brush and paste. Now he was just waiting for the stupid interrogator to show up so he could go home. He was somewhat glad to see Jenks, who showed up around 9am to let him know they were going to question him this morning; he knew that he would be going home soon – at least until they figured out what they were going to charge him with.

There was a knock on the door to the interrogation room Jasper was sitting in before a tall man, around 6 foot, walked into the room. He was dark skinned and had a Caribbean look to him; his heavy accent helped cement the idea that he was not originally from here. (AN: Think Sanka from ‘Cool Runnings’)

“So ya must be Jasper.”

“Yes sir.”

“So what bins ya here?”

“I caught my wife fuckin’ my best friend on my first night home; we got into a fight and he got hurt while I got handcuffed.”

“Man dat ain’t right. How long ya been home?”

“If ya count the day I got here 4 days.”

“So ya weren’ even home long before all hell broke loose?”

“A few hours, if that.”

“Da ya have proof of da incident?”

“Yes actually, I do. My house has 24-hour surveillance inside and out. I have it all recorded at an off site location so that it can’t be tampered with.”

“Do da police have a copy of dis tape?”

“Yeah actually, they do. So does my lawyer, and my brother.”

“So ya covered ya bases.”

“Yeah – and my ass.”

“Well then lets get down ta business den.”

“Sure.”

“How da ya know des Edward Masen?”

“He was a friend of mine and my wife’s.”

“So ya were close.”

“Yeah, I guess ya could say that.”

“And did ya ever hold any ill will taward da man?”

“No. I was happy that Alice had someone she could hangout and talk to while I was overseas.”

“So ya didn’t knaw dat day were havin an affair?”

“Not until the night I came home.”

“When was da last time dat ya checked ya system?”

“Two years ago when I was home on leave.”

“Well I guess dat is all for now, until I look at the footage.”

“Can I go home?”

“If ya Lawyer can promise to have ya back at the courthouse next Monday.”

“Sure he can. Right, Jenks?”

“Yes, he will be there.”

“Then ya are free ta go.”

After collecting what few things they took from him, Jenks drove him home. Once inside he went straight to the shower before changing into civilian clothes. Jasper felt at home, finally.

He then made his way to the bedroom and hauled his mattress – along with all the bed things still on it – to the backyard; he threw some gas on it and then dropped the lit Zippo that Alice had given him for their last anniversary onto the pile. He was so immersed in watching it burn that he didn’t hear Peter come up behind him.

Standing next to his brother he finally felt at peace.

“So you feel better now?” Peter asked.

“I’m getting there. Would like to come in and have a beer?”

“Sure.”

“I will need your help or Ma’s to get a new Mattress and bed things. Alice took care of all that stuff.”

“I’ll send Char and Ma. They will have everything here and put together by tomorrow.”

“Thanks, Peter. I don’t know what I would do without you guys.”

“You’d be in jail for killing Edward not just fighting with him.”

“That is so not funny Peter!

“Yeah actually, it kinda is.”

The boys settle down in front of the TV with a beer; before long the two brothers were fast asleep.
