Chapter 15: Consequences (Pt 1)

What kind of a place was this? Could a world really exist where ancient legends went wandering around the borders of tiny, insignificant towns, facing down mythical monsters? Did this mean every impossible fairy tale was grounded somewhere in absolute truth? Was there anything sane or normal at all, or was everything just magic and ghost stories?

“Alice Cullen You stand accused of the murder of one Charlie Swan and the tribe he guarded 196 counts of willfully committed treason in total”

“How to you plead?”

Bella drew in a breath sharply as Alice didn’t so much as bat an eye at the charges read, nor offer any resistance when two guards caught her by the arms and chained her to two pillars that sprang from the floor. Or at least it looked that way even if Caius had explained there was a mechanism that allowed for its use in all of their thrones, Made dealing with traitors all the easier. At the time she had attempted to shrug off the chill that had danced down her spine at his blood thirsty glee but now she could see its practical nature and it did nothing to calm her.

Tugging once at the restraints to check their strength and discovering she had no escape that way Alice then blankly stared at a fixed point seemingly in space before answering in a slow monotone brought out by an additive to the vegan punch earlier. Sinking onto a stone chair as if she no longer had the strength to stand on her own anymore.

“Guilty… though I never intended for things to get so far out of hand…”

A muted murmur ran through the assembled crowed at these words, snarls and growls escaped a few in the back and even Bella heard a low call for the betrayer to be ended on the spot One phrase and she had already sealed her fate in their eyes thus was the nature of their kind she realized but yet, something was wrong, it was too easy… too Neat.

Caius rose suddenly and swept from his throne placing a hand on either side of Alice’s face as her honey eyes slid closed as Aro placed a single hand on her shoulder and a snarl escaped his lips. The one hooded vampire suddenly let his pike hit the floor in a single thud that silenced the whispers and Bella closed her eyes not wanting to meet the gold gaze as Alice was released and went bone limp held only by her chains as both royals stepped back returning to their thrones before Aro addressed their guests.

“True enough young one, what a tangled web of lies! you had miss calculated!

“She had planned to release the newborns on only one location brothers… Bella’s home thus ensuring her demise and be able escape free of blame taking care to be in another location that day but the deeper you sunk into darkness and confusion the more skewed you’re visions became! You wanted her death so badly you twisted the outcome of any vision you looked for in ways to meet you’re goal seeing only what you wanted not… what was.”

The staff struck once more as disbelieving and shocked whispers broke out Marcus adding his own deafening roar of rage to the din only falling silent only as another thud sounded. Clearly a call to order headed by all but she was glad his arms that suddenly wrapped about her shaking form as she remembered… She had planned a trip to see Charlie that very weekend… had purchased the tickets in fact but a looming deadline for a class project had prompted a last minute frantic search for a missing document that had missed her flight. 20 minutes earlier and she would have landed and arrived at the res… and Alice’s plan would have succeeded.

The vampire herself had suddenly started speaking, rambling as if some internal dam had broken within.

“It was supposed to be quick and easy… in, death and out… but she didn’t come was supposed to be there. I saw it!… and they… just went crazy… apparently a few of the boys had brushed against a rock diving… and… before I could stop them… they… just… ended everything… Couldn’t think… to much to process… and the blood it was… everywhere”

Nauseous now even hearing about it. Bella had remembered her last letter from Sam, both he and Jacob had settled in England and sought profession aid for their night terrors and pain. Both were on the road to recovery but they would carry scars for the remainder of their lives.

One question nagged at her and on impulse she reached out to touch Aro’s hand as he returned to the dais earning a shocked murmur from the assembled crowd. He nodded once and spoke knowing she was well and truly close to tears listening to the ramblings of her former friend and did not wish to chance a show of weakness just yet.

“My sister has one question for you Cullen… Why do you wish her death so badly?”

The answer caused all hell to break out in the throne room and this time there would very little the Viking could do to restore order.

“Why Else! Because…..She stole my mate!”
