The Bodyguard

Chapter 14:

Bella POV

This was the second time I had made the trip to the Walls Unit with Ty to see his father. I really didn’t enjoy them but Ty hated these times. That meant I had to be strong for him. Keep his mind distracted on the hour long drive to Huntsville Texas.

That meant keeping him talking the whole time about anything besides prisons or his father.

“What do you mean my people? Bringing race into this Ty? The hard core brotha who can’t match two socks without his white girlfriend laying them out for him?”

“Cut it out Bella. Don’t be sensitive. You know black folks got some peculiarities that I own up to. I’m just saying you got your own and a bunch of white people share it.”

I had explained that even though we didn’t have much money or time I wanted to take the three days we had before the semester started and maybe miss the first couple days of school and take a honeymoon of some sort. The idea of going back to his Mother’s house to make love for the first time as a married couple did not appeal to me. Ty was fine with that. He asked where I wanted to go. I said Galveston. It was close enough that it wouldn’t cost us a fortune. Even though it was winter I could still enjoy the Victorian Houses and walking the Strand and watching the waves come in. Hit the spa, that sort of thing. Maybe catch a dolphin watching tour or something.

I also wanted to stay at the Galvez in Galveston.

Ty said and I quote, that fucking hotel is haunted and you will not catch my ass there.

I called him a pussy and he said only my people wanted to stay in an establishment of that nature.

“Bullshit Ty. People of all races are into the fact that ghosts exist.”

“Not black people. Least we don’t go looking for that shit.”

“Yes, there are black people who go looking for that shit as you call it.”

“Who?”

He got me on that one.

“I don’t know everyone in the world Ty, but the odds are in favor of it.”

“Look at TV. All those shows you like to watch. Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters international, Ghost Adventures, Dead Files, Destination Truth, Myth Hunters. You see one brotha hosting those damn shows? Even working on the damn so called team? All white boys and girls runnin around in the dark spookin each other. And those fools ain’t even finding shit.”

“They find things all the time Ty.”

He hated that I watched those shows.

“Bullshit. Got that stupid tape recorder all static and shit. Then they listen to that shit and make up things they heard.”

“They don’t make it up Ty. The voices are real.” He is always so cynical.

“Bullshit. Nothing but static then they all jump up excited from some half garbled shit. Did you hear that? Did he say pussy? I heard pussy. I think he said pussy. Then start asking questions again to their imaginary ghost. Were you a pussy in life? Did pussy kill you? Do you want pussy? Stupid, stupid, stupid.”

“They have video Ty.” I pointed out.

“More bullshit. They can’t even be fakin jacks right. They watch for hours and see a dust particle or a glare from a bug and act like it’s some spirit ball floating around. Hell a camera can do that on its own. I’ve filmed enough sex tapes to know what…”

Yeah. He just shut up.

We were quiet for a minute while he stared out the window on the road in front of him, hands clenching the steering wheel. I did my best to bring this up casually.

“So how many sex tapes have you filmed Ty?”

“Huh?”

“I was just wondering, I mean you have never mentioned sex tapes.”

“Oh… yeah… I got rid of those when we hooked up baby. Just never thought to mention it.”

Okay. I guess that was okay.

“So they are all gone?”

“Yeah except…”

“Except?”

“Why the fuck can’t I shut up?” he whispered.

“Tell me you do not have tapes in our home of you having sex with other women Ty!”

“No! Just you!”

Oh. Okay. Thank God. As long as… wait.

I looked over and saw he was very focused on the road.

“Interstate traffic is a bitch today, ain’t it boo?” he asked.

“Yep. Lot of cars on the road.” I agreed.

“So you want to go out tonight?”

“No. I think last night was enough. No more for a while. Besides we have to unpack and I never got around to telling Donna about Feather so I hope we get back before they arrive.”

“Yeah I’m missin Feather too.” Ty said smiling.

“Ty?”

“Yeah Baby?” he swallowed hard, smile gone. Sweat beads formed on his head.

“When did we film a sex tape? Because I don’t remember this.”

“Uh… you see… remember last summer when I came to Houston in July and you spent the month in Florida?”

“Yes.”

“Bella you know I got strong needs would have to take care of myself but I didn’t want to use some stupid porno or magazine and my imagination ain’t that great when I’m tryin to get off. I’m more of a visual person in that situation. But I don’t like pornos and shit cause I only want your sweet ass, doll. So I videotaped us a time or two. I know how shy you are in front of a camera so I didn’t tell you. That way you wouldn’t be embarrassed or all flustered and wondering how you look instead of takin care of business. Got me?”

“So you did me a favor?” I asked to clarify his justification for filming me having sex without my knowledge.

“I’m glad you see it that way baby.” He smiled, patting my thigh.

“I was asking.”

“Oh… yeah, I just didn’t want you to get all nervous and I knew if I asked you would have said yes…”

“No I wouldn’t…”

“and been nervous so I just kinda made an executive relationship call.”

“Executive means you run our relationship. That what you think?”

“No!”

We said nothing for another minute while I digested the fact that I was a porn actress.

“Where was the camera?”

“In between your Kermit the Frog stuffed doll and the TV.”

“I see. That is in front of the bed. So you must have just gotten yourself on top then probably huh?” I hoped.

“You think I videotaped my own ass going up and down in front of the camera?”

Damn it. I could hope.

“I suppose not but I mean… what was I… holy shit is that why you suddenly got so into reverse cowgirl that week?!”

“Yeah…”

“And then I had to turn around… my ass was bouncing on you in these tapes. I hate the back of my thighs!”

“You got beautiful thighs darlin. Smooth and…”

“Then you told me to spin back around and touch myself while you pulled my hair?!”

Ty chuckled.

“Yeah that was a great tape. You was all moaning and buckin, touchin yourself, rubbin your tits and shit. Sexy as hell baby. That was my go to video right there. They all was great but that moaning you did…”

“How… you asshole!… How did my abs look? Did I make that stupid face you say I make sometimes when I am really drunk?”

“You looked perfect boo. The fucked up O face was nowhere around. You know that only comes out when you rotate Vodka and Tequila.”

“No I remember that. I think I started my period the next day and was bloated. Oh fuck. Where are these damn tapes?”

“At home in the fire safe in the closet. You gonna burn the disks ain’t ya?” he sighed.

“Yes!… No… I don’t know. I’m going to have to look at them. I guess I remember working out pretty hard in June. At least I ran a lot. Took a Yoga class too. I have to see them.”

I mean if I looked good and they were already filmed I suppose I couldn’t see the harm. It was wrong that he did it but… it would be kind of cool to watch and on the list of dumb shit Ty has pulled this barely scratched the top 25.

Regardless I had twenty miles to go to keep Ty talking.

“Well at least Garrett confirmed the existence of Bigfoot last night. I believe you owe me an apology for that.”

“Whatever. Those redneck grizzly adam motherfuckers you watch ain’t got a chance in hell of catching a real one.”

“Bullshit! Why not?”

“Cause bigfoots kill people. You heard Garrett. You think those out of shape old hillbillies would be able to take a live one down? Sides every time they ever hear the slightest noise in the woods they start runnin. Why you gonna go out there and hear a noise and then run? Ain’t that what you were there for? That monster huntin shit is another thing your people invented.”

“My people again?”

“Sit back and imagine Dr. Dre and Snoop hangin by a pool with bitches in thongs all around. Snoop leans over to Dre and says, yo dawg, it’s a beautiful day. You want to chill here and drink with the ladies or go out in the fuckin woods in camo, fightin bugs and snakes and other dangers of the wild to see if we can’t track down some monster. Then if we hear something we can run before we find out what it is.

Now tell me can you imagine it?”

I closed my eyes and thought of Snoop and Dre.

“Yeah. I can see it.” I admitted.

“Whatever. One good thing about last night is I can get you to stop watching those damn UFO shows with those freaks who somehow got PhDs. Especially that dude whose hair looks like he got hit by lightning and talks like he knows everything.”

“Why would I stop watching those?”

“UFOs ain’t real. Don’t you think with all the other shit we learned from Garrett last night if UFOs was real he would have told us?”

“Of course he wouldn’t Ty. He works for the government. He’s part of the cover up.”

“Cover up? The man told us everything except who killed Kennedy last night.”

“I bet it was aliens.” I thought out loud. “Probably why he didn’t tell us about them.”

“Thought you said it was the mob?”

“Aliens have to make a living too Ty. You don’t think if they were posing as humans being a mob boss would be a perfect cover. Remember Kennedy was a huge proponent of NASA and winning the space race. Maybe they didn’t want us to win. Maybe…”

“Maybe you a bit more like your Mom than you let on.” He laughed.

Okay then.

I sat in silence for a few moments, digesting what he just said. My first inclination was to jam a ball point pen sitting in the console through his ear into his tiny brain.

I calmed myself though. Stress is bad for the baby.

“I admit the alien connection to the Kennedy assassination is tenuous at best. But that does not dismiss the hundreds of thousands of sightings over recorded history by hundreds of thousands of reliable witnesses. UFOs were even written about in the Bible.” I pointed out.

“You only know that because you saw it on TV. You thought Jesus pulled a boat with animals when he walked on water and he named the boat Noah’s Ark. You asked me which animal was Noah. Don’t start quotin bible to me Bella. Woman you are hopelessly outgunned.”

“It was on the History Channel. Not like those channels you watch. They are a legitimate, well respected channel. Does it really matter where Jesus came up with the name for the boat? UFOs Ty. They were there.”

“What book?”

“What?”

“The UFO sighting. What book?” he pressed.

“I told you the Bible.”

“What book of the Bible?” he asked.

“The one the TV show talked about!” See how he likes that.

“Look you just don’t want to give it up. Why don’t you just keep watchin for ghosts and bigfoots and I will be the one grabbing your ass and runnin when you actually do find something. I mean you found a shit load of vampires and werewolves already. It’s only a matter of time before you find some other damn monster, besides the one under my buckle right here.”

He was patronizing me. That would not stand. I turned quickly to the backseat, not giving him time to think.

“Quick Connolly, are aliens real? Yes or no, right now!”

His face didn’t betray a thing.

“You two are some seriously weird motherfuckers.” Connolly responded. I had almost forgotten he was back there, he had been so quiet.

“There is you answer Ty. Aliens exist.”

“He didn’t say that.”

“Exactly. He has nothing to hide if aliens don’t exist. What would be the point of keeping that a secret? He didn’t deny it but tried to deflect the question and point out how weird you are…”

“I said both of you.” Connolly mentioned.

“Shut up back there. Anyway the fact that he didn’t say no means it’s a yes.” I finished.

“Uh huh.” Ty said dismissively. I hate that.

“Tell him Connolly. Tell us what is at area 51. We want to know and you are going to give us the answers.”

“Or what?” he smirked.

“Or…” I looked at Ty.

“Don’t look at me. You heard he’s like an albino Bruce Lee, Terminator, Rambo combination. What you want me to do? You wouldn’t even let me hit my uncle. Now you want me to take out Terminator back there? You out of your mind girl.”

“I might be willing to tell you what is at Area 51 if you say… need an impartial judge to view those sex tapes of you on top Bella and judge how your thighs look. I promise to be tough and thorough but fair.”

“You know that shit ain’t funny.” Ty said glaring at him from the rear view mirror.

“Apologies. I will tell you what you want to know about Area 51.”

“Seriously? What is really there?” Stay calm. Don’t act too excited.

“Absolutely nothing.”

Ty laughed. “Told you.”

“He’s lying.” I told Ty, glaring at Connolly.

“No I’m not. Swear to God.”

“You expect me to believe that? Everyone in the world knows there is something at Area 51. Something the gov… you guys are hiding.”

“Exactly Bella. If we had a secret as big as UFOs and aliens you think we would keep it at the one place the world was watching? There is nothing but a bunch of empty hangars and about thirty scientists working on a new type of food for the Astronauts on a potential trip to Mars. They tested new spy planes during the Cold War. That is probably what gave rise to the UFO rumors. Regardless so many people started investigating the base, trying to sneak in, the Air Force just sort of perpetuated the mystery. Always actin like they were hiding something, causing the conspiracy people to go nuts.”

Wow.

“So you guys have something? Somewhere else?”

He just smiled.

“Told you Ty.”

“Hey answer her. She ain’t gonna let it go unless you tell her the truth that aliens don’t exist.” Ty told him.

“Answer what? She wanted to know what was at Area 51. I told her the truth.”

“Where are the Aliens being kept?” I pressed, wondering if I could slip his gun away and hold it to his head. Chances were pretty slim of that being possible.

“Sorry. Looks like we are here. You’re going to have to wait. Maybe I tell you while I’m giving you my opinion on your thighs.”

Fucker.

Ty POV

Lord I hated this fucking place. I couldn’t imagine a worse place on Earth. I heard Mexican prisons and maybe some in some South American Countries are worse but I just couldn’t imagine it. There was a feeling of dread when you first approached the tall red gates. Prisoners just released hanging out by the bus stop outside waiting to go wherever the fuck they came from. The red walls topped by bard wire and guard shacks where men with rifles sat, waiting for the chance to shoot someone.

It didn’t belong here. A block away was downtown Huntsville, a nice little town with East Texas Pines littering the area, even in city limits. But the prison was here while the town was still growing. Now a fair sized University sat two blocks away but that came later. The Walls Unit came first and wouldn’t die.

This place opened its doors in 1849 and it hasn’t been updated since. No air condition inside except a window unit in the Wardens office. Even the guards hated working in this fuckin place. Plus it had an aura of oppression to it that weighed on you. All the violence and death that had occurred here over the years. If Renee laid out her crystals those fuckers would explode. This was where the execution chamber was. It certainly wasn’t white collar criminals that were placed here. Plus it stank. The smell of this place was like a sweaty locker room mixed with a decaying scent you couldn’t quite place. The guards weren’t friendly, not because they hated you, but because working in this place was hell for them as well.

Dad been here since he got convicted. I never understood why he never got transferred to some of the many newer units in the system. I guess they figured a lifer for murder belonged here.

“Bella you sure you want to…” I stopped when I saw her face. She came here last time with me. I was happy at first, then I just wanted to take her and run from here. I didn’t like her bein here at all, but she insisted.

We walked into the front building and before I could say anything Bella was at the front.

“Hi! We are here to see Tyrone Gavin. We have a visitation appointment set at 1:00.”

The guard at the desk looked at her with indifference, surprising seein how damn hot she is. He was about 50 or so, bald with a large gut threatening to break out of that grey uniform shirt.

“Visitation is cancelled today.” He told her in a bored tone.

“Sounds good. Sorry to be a bother. Let’s go Bell…”

“Excuse me, we had an appointment. We traveled a very long ways to be here.” Bella told him.

“No you didn’t. Everybody knows who Ty Gavin is. I saw your interview the other day. You are in Houston right now. In Texas young lady we don’t consider 60 miles a very long way.”

“Why can’t we see him?” she pressed while I debated throwing her over my shoulder and walking out.

“Not that it is any of your concern but there was a shakedown of the whole facility. A ton of handmade weapons and drugs were found. As a result visitation has been suspended for a month in response.”

“You are punishing them? All of them whether they had something or not? You can’t treat them like children.” Bella told him sternly. Oh fuck here we go again.

“Yes we can lady. For your information they are children. Violent children who would gang rape you if we left you alone in the yard through the door behind me and then probably slit your throat with one of the handmade weapons we found.”

Oh hell no.

“You best watch how you talk to her fool!”

Nobody talks to my woman like that. I realize she can be pushy but what the fuck? I gonna have to track this fucker to his house…

“I think it is best if you leave before we have an incident. I don’t give a damn who you are. You aren’t getting special treatment.” He told me bowing up.

“No but I am.”

Connolly stepped up to the desk, gently pulling Bella back.

“And who are you?”

“You know what this is?” He pulled a card of some sort out of his back pocket. He was wearing worn blue jeans boots and a white Johnny Cash t shirt I thought hung a bit low. I could see why. I know he had two holsters under his shirt on his backside. Who knew what else he had on him.

I peeked to see what the fuck he was holding. It looked like a black card about the size of a credit card. I didn’t see a name. Instead there was about 7 numbers under a silver star surrounded by a bunch of tiny stars.

“No… uh…”

“You know what it is. You aren’t sure but you know. When you started here you were given a list of badges to recognize. This is one, probably one you were told you would never see in your life. Call your Warden now and bring him up.”

“What is your name sir?” the guard asked. I noted he was shakin a bit. I needed to get me one of those cards.

“You don’t want to know my name. Take that card and show it to your Warden. Now.”

Once he walked off I whispered to Connolly.

“What the fuck was that?”

“Key to the city. Every special forces member is given a card. The cards have different levels of importance and are meant to alert law enforcement personnel that they are to assist the card carrier. The level of assistance is dependent on the card.”

“What level did you show him?”

“I’m pretty much in charge of this place now. The Warden will be calling the Department of Defense right now who will verify the card numbers are legitimate and to do as I say.”

We waited for another ten minutes. Bella and Connolly stood silent, I was nervous as fuck.

I never knew what to say to the man. He was my father but what do you say right? How is prison? I never saw him more than once a year for an hour growing up. Now we made awkward small talk and that’s about it. He talked about how proud he was of me, like he had a damn right to be proud of me. He didn’t have shit to do with it.

The only reason I gave this man the time of day is because he tried to save the guy his partner shot. He was part of it but he at least showed some decency.

A guy I guessed was the warden walked out. He was a small guy for what you would think a warden would look like. Short, skinny, glasses, thin blonde hair. He looked way out of place in this oversize dungeon.

“Yes sir, are you the holder of this card?”

Connolly took it from his hand and smiled.

“Yes. You are Warden Joseph Tymes correct? Been here since 2006, Master’s Degree from SMU 2002 in Sociology. 45 years old, wife and three children, two blonde haired girls and a brown haired boy who takes after his mother I would guess. You have a timeshare at Lake Conroe and enjoy sailing. You also live at 166 Broadview here in Huntsville right? I understand you like to get the morning paper from the end of your driveway in your robe?”

“Yes… uh…” Poor guy cleared his throat and loosened his collar. “I don’t suppose I could know your name?”

“Of course. I’m Peter Parker or Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne or… well you get the idea. We need to see Mr. Gavin. Since I don’t imagine you want him to be seen as getting preferential treatment why don’t you just bring him to your office and we can visit with him alone.”

“Of… of course… just follow me. If you are carrying any weapons… we have a policy about…”

“Joey?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t.”

“Okay. Follow me please.”

“Damn Connolly. I ain’t ever comin back here without you.” I whispered.

He just smiled so I followed Joey to his office. He assured us we would not be bothered and left quickly.

A few moments later and the door opened once more. My Dad looked confused until he saw me.

“Ty? Why the hell are we in here?”

“My friend here knows people.” I told him.

Bella walked up and hugged him. It bothered me a bit but I didn’t know why. Yeah I did. I was ashamed of him and seein her with the part of me I wanted to ignore bothered me. I felt bad that I felt that but I couldn’t help it. I loved her and only wanted her to see the best of me. And like she always does she accepted all of me.

“Congratulations Bella. I am so happy. You two are gonna have a beautiful baby.”

“Thank you Mr. Gavin.”

“None of that now. I’m Dad.”

I snorted and I guess it caught his attention. He walked up and offered his hand. I took it.

“Good to see you son. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to this trip down with all the ruckus here the last few days.”

He opened his arms for a hug. I hesitated but hugged him back. I mean fuck it I hug everybody else. Still it was awkward.

I motioned to the couch and Bella sat on one side and I sat on another.

“So schools over in a few months huh? When you two getting married?”

“Four weeks.” I told him. “Little less now I guess.”

“That’s good. That’s real good. So uh Bella when you gonna find out what type of bun you got in your oven?”

“It will probably be in 6 weeks or so, I think, before we can tell.”

“That’s gonna be exciting. Send me a letter if you can. Or… I guess it’s too soon to be thinking about names.”

“If it is a boy he will be Tyrone Gavin the Third.” Bella told him immediately. I had my doubts but she was adamant. It was a family name and I guess Dad thought… Damn he had tears in his eyes.

“Thank you for that Bella. I would understand if… I mean it’s just a…”

“They treatin you alright? You havin any gang problems? Any word if they will transfer you out of this hell hole?”

“I’m fine Ty. This hell hole, damn son, I’ve been here so long it’s my home. I don’t know if I would want another set of bars. I know how life works here. I’m comfortable.”

That damn near broke my heart. What was my baby gonna do? I wasn’t ever gonna let him or her come to this place. Ever.

I guess he would settle for photos.

He started to ask Bella something when I heard the door open. Connolly said something and then I jumped towards Bella while she screamed at the sound of the gunshot. I turned to the door and saw… Ahh damn.

Connolly POV

I did my best to not listen to the conversation. I told Garrett I could handle this while he and the team stayed in Houston and performed recon, trying to track these bitches. Simple trip out of town to see the old inmate and back to Houston.

I had a feeling this trip just got much more complicated.

The door opened. I assumed it was the Warden.

“I said we were to be left alone.”

I then turned and saw an inmate with a broom in his hand, wearing the familiar striped uniform. The inmate looked up with a smile and locked his blood red eyes on mine.

I suppose he meant to play with us because he never made a move while I pulled my gun from my back holster. I placed it to his skull and he looked like he was about to laugh. I never got the chance to find out because his head exploded in a ball of fire.

I brushed the flaming pieces off my face and backed up. Bella screamed. Ty jumped around his father and covered her body with his.

His father just kinda sat there and stared at me.

Taking my ear piece out of my pocket I went to work.

“Rudi? You there?” I hoped these fucking walls didn’t screw up the signal.

“Yep. Got your location. What’s goin… damn. That’s not good.”

Shit.

“What isn’t good?”

“I got you and three people close, plus one person to your right apparently burning. I also have four cold spots resembling human movement coming your way.”

Fuck. Vampires generally run at an internal body temperature of anywhere from 60 to 74 degrees. Our satellites take temperature spots of a complete environment and pick out what objects in that temperature range are moving. Rooms at room temperature can generally be a problem but considering it is eighty degrees in this prison despite being January, picking up moving objects in that range were not difficult.

Killing four vampires may be though.

“What the hell is going on?” The Warden asked rushing in. “What the hell is that?” he asked, pointing to the headless burning corpse on the floor.

“Warden listen to me. Run to the control room and lock this prison down. Nobody comes out of the cells. Tell your guys to stand down. Do not fire at anyone.”

“I don’t think I…”

“Do as I say or I shoot you now and do it myself. Understand?”

“Yes.” He moved to the hallway and took off to the right.

“Hey! Go to the left.”

“It’s farther to the control room.”

“Trust me. Also Mr. Gavin is coming with me. He could be a target of a potential terrorist attack. Do as I say and you will be a hero. Don’t and you will not make it home. Move now.”

He ran to the left this time.

“Rudi talk to me.”

“They are walking slow, human speed, probably tryin to blend in. Maintain the illusion till the last minute”

“Monitor the controls of this place and make sure the cells are locked down. Warden is supposed to take care of it but he doesn’t strike me as the type to do well in stressful situations.”

“Call Garrett?”

“No time. Get me a chopper in the main yard for extraction. Whatever is closet and can get here fastest and then give me an ETA to LZ. You got 60 seconds.”

“Roger.”

I looked behind me. Ty was backed up in a corner. Bella’s head kept trying to look around him. Mr. Gavin was still staring at the body on the floor.

“Ty up here.”

He moved quick but pulled Bella with him.

“Listen there are four more vampires here. We are going to catch a ride out of here in the courtyard. We need to move. Take this.”

I handed Ty the other gun I had on my back.

“Bella you know how to shoot?”

“Yes!” she nearly yelled walking around Ty and looking very annoyed. I bent down and took the .40 strapped my leg over my boot and handed it to her. I was pleased to see she cleared the chamber and took the safety off.

“Listen, Bella you have ten shots in yours, Ty you have a 16 round clip. Make the shots count but if you see one aim dead center mass and then after they are down, shoot the head.

“Bullshit!”

I looked at Bella who appeared furious.

“Problem?”

“Why do I get the girl gun? Why does Ty get 16 and I get 10?”

I managed not to roll my eyes.

“Let’s move.”

“Connolly, ETA on Chopper is ten minutes. Facility is secured, all inmates in cells and locked down. I don’t see any hostiles in the cell blocks unless they are warmer than 79.8 degrees.

“Anybody in front and to the left, Rudi?”

“Nope. But they are thirty feet away. Moving faster now. Must smell their burning friend.”

I pushed Bella, Ty and his father in front of me and followed them keeping my weapon drawn in the hallway. They would have a limited area in the hall and shouldn’t be able to surround us.

“Stay between me and my Dad Bella.” I heard Ty say. Like she was going to listen to him.

Footsteps. I could make out footsteps behind us.

“Ahh fuck.”

“What? I asked Ty without turning around.

“Got a locked door here Connolly. It ain’t budgin.”

“Rudi?”

“You said you wanted everything locked down. I can override but it will take a bit.”

“Do it already. We will hold the hallway.”

“We will?” Bella asked.

I dropped to one knee. Ty and Bella dropped beside me.

“When they show themselves aim for the chest and fire three shots. There are four left so far, so don’t waste ammo. They are all coming down that hall and should be here any second.”

The footsteps slowed down. All was quiet.

Finally one stepped slowly around and smiled. He was a Hispanic looking fellow with long black hair and red eyes, wearing a guard’s uniform.

“Hello. My name is…”

Bella Ty and I all opened fire at the same time. We never did learn his name. His body shook against the corner wall and his chest burst open in flames. I raised my third shot and tagged him in the head.

“What the fuck?” I heard around the corner.

“Connolly you got five for Chopper. I can open door now. You want me to? I can’t guarantee they won’t circle you. You want to end it here in the bottleneck?”

That was the call wasn’t it?

“Open the door. If they want to get to us from behind the door won’t be much of a problem.”

The door slid open behind us.

“Give us the girl and the rest of you can walk.” A soft and almost seductive voice down the hall said calmly, still causing a slight echo in the air.

“Excuse me sir but how many vampires did you arrive with?”

“There are 5 of us.” He chuckled.

“You should probably do a head count. Pretty sure there are three of you left. Seems to me like you should be surrendering right now.”

No chuckle. Maybe he was considering what I said. He would probably raise his hands and surrender any minute.

I saw an arm… wait that’s a body… what the…

“Duck!” Ty yelled as the body of some poor bastard flew over our heads through the door that had just been opened.

“Was that a body? They are throwing bodies now? What the fuck!” Bella yelled. She then began firing down the hall. My hand stopped her.

“Don’t waste ammo. What part of that is not clear?”

“He threw a body at us.” She argued.

“And you shot a wall. Use your head.”

“Sorry.” She said quietly, the look of anger never leaving her face.

“Two minutes Connolly. You need to make your move. Looks like a couple more jumped the walls and are inside, heading towards the LZ. No scratch that, one just split to the yard, another is joining the three just around your bend.”

Fuck.

“What’s up Connolly?” Ty asked, eyes focused down the hall.

“One is out in the courtyard. It needs to be dealt with before the chopper can land. Three are still down that hall.” I whispered.

“Ain’t that a bitch?”

“Yep. Whisper Gavin. They can hear our voices. Think you can take the one outside? You just have to go through the door behind us, run down about fifty yards and I’ll have Rudi open up a door on your right to the courtyard. When you see the bastard get as close as you can and shoot him.”

“In the open? I ain’t got those kind of skills Connolly. Better if I stay here and keep these three occupied while you get my woman out of here.”

“I’m not leaving you Ty!” Bella replied immediately.

“You carryin our child Bella. My baby. Take my Dad and go with Connolly and get in that chopper. As soon as you leave they are going to give up anyway. I can hold them here. They step around I’m gonna smoke their asses.”

“Ty no!” Bella hissed.

“You willing to risk our baby?!” Ty hissed back.

This was taking too long.

“Bella how many shots do you have?”

“Four.” Damn it she was tearing up. I didn’t need this shit now.

“Give it to me. Gavin take my weapon. You should have around twenty shots. Use them well. Listen to this earpiece. Whisper to him. He can hear him. His name is Rudi. He will give you real time info on who is out there. Soon as I get these two on the chopper I am coming back.”

“Just get her out of here.”

“Ty…”

“Not now boo. Daddy got some bitches to light up.”

“Rudi open up the hall door to the courtyard. I’m taking Bella out. Gavin will have the com. Keep him up to date.” I handed the earpiece to Ty and started to drag Bella away

“Let’s go Mr. Gavin.”

“I’m not leaving my son. Get her out of here.”

“Ty come with us!” Bella yelled. A vampire’s head poked around the corner and Ty fired. The vampire moved his head back. They have figured out that bullets are bad.

I grabbed Bella by the waist and started dragging her out. She was fighting me. I stopped and yelled at her.

“The sooner I can kill that vampire and get you high in the air I can go back and help him! You keep fighting me you are going to get yourself, your baby and your fiancé killed. Now get it together!”

She at least calmed down.

“We are wasting time. Let’s go!” Bella took off running. I give her credit when she jumps aboard its full steam ahead. I entered the courtyard in front of her, scanning the yard. As I looked to my right I felt the blow. I dodged a split second before I would have taken it in the chest but the vampire’s arm struck my shoulder and I spun, hitting the ground. My weapon fell a foot from my hand.

I reached for it and found a vampire on top of me. A pretty girl with pigtails in a white spring dress, looking every bit like the girl next door.

She opened her mouth and moved for my neck. I lunged for my weapon and fell inches short. I could feel the bitch’s breath.

She stopped when Bella screamed. I looked at Bella and saw she had cut her hand and flung blood at the creature. The vampire rose just enough to take pressure off my chest. I grabbed the gun. This took her attention from Bella. She looked down in time to see the bullet enter her forehead.

I waved the chopper in. I needed to get her out of here. I saw guards on the tower looking panicked. They may be a problem but we would deal with them later. Payoffs and threats of prison should do it. I can’t imagine they are paid much here nor do they want to stay in a place like it.

“Go get him!” Bella screamed over the rotors as she lifted off. I turned and saw something I hoped she didn’t. Three flashes just entered into the door I just left.

Gavin was going to be caught from both sides.

Oh well. I had three shots left. This was as good a day to die as any.

Ty POV

Those fuckers weren’t movin.

“Those fuckers ain’t movin.” My Dad mentioned.

“Nope.”

“What are they?”

“You would never guess.” I told him honestly.

“Probably not. I’d say vampires or some stupid shit like that. Give me one of those guns.”

“You remember how to use one?” I asked casually.

“Unfortunately.”

Fuck it. I handed him one. Gonna go he may as well go fighting like I am. One thing was for certain, if I made it out of this alive I was never coming back to this fucking place again.

“Ty, Bella is in the air and safe. You got three coming in from the yard. Connolly is pursuing but they are going to get to you in a few seconds. Four are now around the corner in front.

“Alright, thanks Rudi. Just get my woman safe.”

I whispered to Dad.

“You keep your eyes on that corner. I’m gonna start firin at some bitches comin from the other side alright?”

“I got ya son.”

“They move fast as damn light. Slightest target and you fire.”

‘Got it son. Keep your end, I got this.”

Rudi’s voice popped up once again.

“One more comin in from the side. Looks like he is busting through walls. He will be right in front of you in seconds.”

Shit before the words left his mouth the wall to my right side exploded a few feet in front of me. I raised my gun but didn’t shoot.

I’ll be damned.

Jasper fucking Whitlock.

“Sorry I’m late Boss.”

“Who the hell is this?” Dad asked raising his gun. I pulled his arm down.

“Don’t shoot. This is my bodyguard.”
