Outtake 03: Welcome Home

Tatsu & Violet

TIMELINE: Knightmare, chapter 7; the day after Diana and Tatsu meet

Violet was so confused when she had woken up that morning. Their bags were packed, sitting by the door despite Tatsu saying they would be staying in this rundown motel for a few days.

Tatsu had attacked Bruce Wayne sooner than expected, seeing an opportunity quickly to retrieve Soultaker. They had been chasing the sword for almost a year, right after Tatsu had killed Lady Eve and the last of the Kobra Cult members.

Lady Eve had nearly killed them in Paris then tracked them to Berlin, but Tatsu was ready for her. It was a bloody fight but ended with several members dead and Lady Eve’s head separated from her body.

Tatsu had wanted to search for Soultaker immediately but knew they couldn’t just yet. Instead, she took Violet to a remote cabin in Southern Austria where they stayed for two months, ensuring that they rested and recovered from their wounds. They also needed time for Violet to completely free herself of the drug addiction that plagued her from when she was twelve, the result of her imprisonment by the cult. They kept all humans held for experiments drugged, addicted and docile. Violet had managed not to be experimented on, praying every day for a miracle.

Then Tatsu had arrived, freed them all and became the miracle she needed.

Tatsu had allowed Violet to accompany her, never losing patience with her. Violet liked to say they took care of each other, but it wasn’t true. Tatsu saved her life, more than once. She initially saved her from a cult that had hooked her on drugs to keep her calm and available for any experiments they had. She then saved her from those same cult members who wanted her back and wanted revenge on Tatsu for rescuing her. Apparently, they had been saving Violet for a specific experiment and needed her back no matter the cost.

When Violet was shaking from withdrawals, Tatsu was there to hold her. When she was hungry, Tatsu always brought her food, even if it meant hunting in the wild and cooking over an open fire.

Tatsu was different with Violet than she was with others, she was more open. Violet knew about her brother-in-law killing her husband with Soultaker. She knew of her son who had been murdered by that same bastard in an attempt to get Soultaker and she knew Tatsu had killed him with a katana in her family, ten generations old.

She shared Tatsu’s rage when Soultaker was cowardly stolen from her. They traveled around the world, looking for Talia who had boastfully left her calling card until they tracked her to Gotham City. They watched her give Soultaker to Bruce Wayne. He disappeared shortly afterward, as did the sword.

Deception was not going to get her far, so Tatsu decided mortal combat was the only answer. She wasn’t sure of Bruce Wayne’s skill, only what she had heard. He was Talia’s lover and the Demon’s Head wanted him for a successor. He must have had great skill but so did she.

Violet was given money, and instructions on what to do if Tatsu should fall, who to find, how to hide

but Violet decided that was never going to happen. She owed everything to Tatsu and when she saw the woman who was the only family she had ever known on her knees, she rushed in, hoping to provide some distraction.

Instead, she found herself on the couch with a beautiful, dark-haired woman complimenting her sneakers she had personally decorated. The woman was very nice and have even slipped her a bit of alcohol into her soda, giving her a sly wink. Tatsu would have been furious if she knew. Given her history, even the slightest alcohol was forbidden by Tatsu, and she understood why.

To her great relief, Bruce Wayne turned out to be a stand-up guy and just returned Soultaker to her. Tatsu had mentioned something about demons’ souls, but Violet wasn’t really paying any mind. She just wanted to leave.

When they arrived back at their motel, Tatsu told her to go to sleep while she stood guard. Violet knew they had stayed at rougher places but the crowd around her was shady.

It didn’t matter. Whenever she was with Tatsu, she felt safe. The cult seemed to be truly dead. No one had been after them in months. Tatsu had Soultaker back and perhaps now, they could find some peace, maybe find a permanent place to stay.

Now as she woke from a deep sleep, Tatsu had their bags packed and was telling her they were leaving.

“Where are we going?” She asked, confused.

“I have a job now. We are going to a nicer hotel today and then we will move somewhere permanent that will be provided for us. Probably an apartment.”

Violet raised an eyebrow. “An apartment? What kind of apartment?”

“Hopefully the kind that does not have drug dealers and prostitutes outside the door. For now, we are going to the Belmont.” Tatsu told her.

Violet still didn’t understand. “What job, Tatsu? Talk to me, please. When did you even go to a job interview?”

Tatsu sat down at the edge of the hard bed. “The woman, Diana Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s sister. She is very wealthy and has need of a bodyguard. She came here while you slept. She wants me to be her bodyguard. In return, we will have a nice place to stay, I will have steady income, we will both have citizenship, and I will be declared your legal guardian.

“We can make a home here. You can be educated.”

“I know how to read! I can read Markovian and English.” Violet countered.

“Yes,” Tatsu agreed. “You are very smart. Think of how much smarter you could be if you had a teacher, some organized education, a diploma. If I do well, I may be able to send you to college! Think about it, Violet. Everything I want for you, for us, we could have.”

Violet still wasn’t sure. “How do you know this isn’t a set up? You did try to kill her brother.”

Tatsu understood her concern. Given the past few years, she couldn’t blame her doubting something that seemed too good to be true.

“If she wanted me dead, she could have killed me last night easily. The woman… she is different. There is a great power in her, one I have never felt before. She said she only needs me for show and I believe her. She would also be a strong ally should any old enemies come for us. Talia would not dare cross her.” Tatsu explained, hoping to ease the girl’s worries. “Violet, I need you to trust me. This is for the best. It is a miracle. For once, things are looking up. Let’s not think on it too hard and just accept it.”

Violet supposed she was right, but she was cautious. “It could still be a trap.”

Tatsu sighed. A part of her was proud of Violet’s wariness but a bigger part was sad as it was a reminder of how one so young saw the world.

“If it is, we will fight our way out, together. As irritated as I was at you for not following directions, you were right. We do look out for each other.”

Violet snorted. “Tatsu, you know you take care of me. What do I do for you?”

Tatsu caressed her cheek and kissed the top of her head. “Violet you will never understand how much you do and how important you are to me.

“Now get dressed. Wear something without holes. This hotel is called the Belmont. I am guessing from the name that it is not a Holiday Inn.”

An hour later, Tatsu and Violet arrived in front of the very tall, very expensive looking Belmont Hotel in their old, inexpensive car.

She parked in the front, not sure what to do with her car.

A well-dressed man in a fancy suit walked outside, with two bellboys behind him. Tatsu and Violet were each carrying a bag, and Tatsu had the wooden case with Soultaker inside it. The bellboys tried to take the bags but, while Tatsu let one have her bag, she stopped him with a look when he reached for Soultaker. He quickly got the message.

“Miss Yamashiro and Miss Violet.” The man greeted them. “We were given a description of your car and told you would be arriving. I am Antonio, the manager of this hotel. Miss Wayne has tasked me with providing anything you need, so do not hesitate to ask.

“Now, would you like to go to your room? We prepared the penthouse.”

Violet looked to the top of the building, craning her neck up and felt very small.

“We can’t be in the right place.” Violet whispered to herself.

“Shouldn’t we check in?” Tatsu asked.

“There is no need,” Antonio replied with a smile. “Everything is taken care of. From what I understand, you will be meeting with our personal shopper today as Miss Wayne wants the two of you to have new wardrobes. She told me you will be looking at property around the city, but if I may suggest the apartments across the street. They are among the most opulent in Gotham and only six blocks away from Wayne Tower, as I am sure you have noticed.”

It was impossible not to notice, Violet thought. The building was huge.

She followed Tatsu and this Antonio guy into the hotel and tried to keep her mouth closed. The area was beautiful, the atrium was elegant, and she could see its ceiling was several stories high. They entered a glass elevator and she held onto Tatsu’s arm as they went higher. Then the atrium was gone, and they continued to rise.

When the elevator opened, rather than a hallway, they were in the biggest room Violet had ever seen. It was more than a room. It was like a house. There was a full-size kitchen, doors she bet led to bedrooms and bathrooms, and it smelled good!

“The kitchen is fully stocked. If there is something you require, anything at all, please let us know and it will be delivered to you.”

Tatsu looked around quietly. “I am afraid the shopper will have to wait. I have no money yet. I have not started my job.”

Antonio chuckled. “You are Miss Wayne’s guests. No money is necessary. It is quite common for select employees to be given clothes, company cars and apartments at the start their employment. You must hold a very important position.”

Tatsu shrugged. “I am to be Miss Wayne’s bodyguard.”

“Finally.” The man placed a hand on his chest, sounding relieved. “We all worry about her, someone of her stature and wealth walking around unprotected so often. I can tell by your countenance you are fierce.”

“Did you say company car?” Violet asked. “What kind of car?”

“Whatever kind you want most likely.” Antonio told her. “I will give the two of you time to settle in. It is important that everything goes well and you are happy here. Miss Wayne told me to ensure it and I am very good at my job. You may fix dinner with the groceries you have, call the front desk to have any restaurant meal delivered or join us on the fifty-first floor restaurant.”

Tatsu shook her head. “I don’t believe we have the clothes for that.”

The man shook his head. “You are Miss Wayne’s special guest. You could wear a swimsuit, and no one would say a word. Relax. You will receive a call when the personal shopper has arrived.”

Antonio handed her a card. “Call this number if you need me, anytime, twenty-four hours a day. It will be my pleasure to make this a visit you will not forget Miss Yamashiro.”

Antonio walked out with his two bellboys, leaving Violet and Tatsu alone. They walked through the Penthouse, taking in everything in silence. They entered huge bedrooms, huge bathrooms, turned on the very large, high-definition television and then returned to the biggest bedroom.

The two looked at each other and smiled, then ran towards the bed, jumping in the air and landing on the soft mattress, screaming in glee.

“Oh God, I am so glad you tried to kill Bruce Wayne.” Violet said, joy blooming in her heart.

“It did work out rather well.” Tatsu admitted.

They checked the kitchen and saw more food than either had seen in a very long time.

“There is steak in here! Meat you haven’t had to hunt and butcher yourself!” Violet pointed out. “This is amazing. What kind of clothes do you think we will have?”

“The kind without holes.” Tatsu replied drily. “She said she wanted me to wear a light coat so I can carry Soultaker with me.”

“Whoa, that’s freaking cool. I doubt you would go anywhere without it again.” Violet admitted. “You said you felt power from her. Why do you think she needs us? Wait, did you say something about demons last night?”

Tatsu shrugged. “Bruce Wayne has killed something… unnatural with Soultaker. Or perhaps she did. She isn’t normal. She could have killed me in a second last night. It doesn’t matter.”

“But what if she wants you to kill demons?” Violet asked.

Tatsu laughed quietly. “All this for you? I’ll fight an army of demons for her. This is it, Violet. Everything I have wanted for you.”

Tatsu was looking around the place again, giving Violet the opening she needed.

“Tatsu?”

“Yes?”

When she turned, Violet struck her in the head with a fluffy pillow from the couch.

“Always be prepared for an attack.” Violet told her then squealed when Tatsu picked her up by the waist, deposited her on the couch and began tickling her.

That evening, they had a visitor.

“I’m Avette.” The tall brunette greeted them. “I am the personal shopper for Diana Wayne’s evening wear for when she attends high society functions and in the event that any of her special guests are in need of my services. I should have brought my business partner. She is a blonde and is Kara Wayne’s personal shopper.”

Violet raised an eyebrow. “I thought you just bought clothes for people she asked you to. You actually buy her clothes?”

“I do, quite often. My business partner buys clothes for Kara.”

“Why don’t they buy their own clothes?” Violet asked.

“Because they are both busy women. Diana also requires many work outfits that are tailored to her body. It is my job to ensure she is always dressed for the right occasion in a manner that showcases her stunning figure. I have most of her dresses made specifically for her. As far as Kara, she would never wear anything besides blue jeans and old t-shirts if we didn’t buy clothes for her.”

Violet was impressed. “I knew this Diana was rich like Bruce Wayne, but I’ve never heard of Kara Wayne. They much be like super, super rich, huh?”

Avette looked at them, surprised, then focused back on Violet. “You have never heard of Kara Wayne? Where have you been?”

“Running and fighting for our lives, mostly.”

Tatsu bumped her in the shoulder and gave her that look she reserved for when Violet talked too much.

“She can be a drama queen. Teenagers.” Tatsu said, her voice calm and becoming less animated. Tatsu was a different person around Violet but when others were around, she became very serious and didn’t speak much. Violet suspected it was an armor she used against others.

“Of course. My youngest sister is a teenager. Kara Wayne made every electronic device in this room. Also the phones you carry.”

“We don’t have phones.” Violet told her.

Avette pulled two brand new smart phones from her bag. “Now you do. So this is going to be fun. We are doing entire wardrobes, including shoes. I have my laptop with me that we can connect to the television, and you can give me an idea of what you like, and I can go from there.”

“I need underwear.” Violet added. “Also socks, if I could get the small ankle types that don’t have holes over the big toe. That would be so amazing. Can you get me socks like that?”

Avette smiled at the girl. “Oh child, we are about to have so much fun.”

The next day was spent modeling clothes for Tatsu, putting on a fashion show and doing her best to imitate runway models she had seen on television. Tatsu enjoyed the show and Violet saw her eyes get misty but didn’t say anything. Tatsu hated crying, but perhaps good tears didn’t bother her as much.

That night they had eaten at a restaurant and Tatsu hoped Antonio hadn’t been lying when he said it was free. Fortunately, he hadn’t been, and they were treated like VIPs even given a table next to the window that overlooked Gotham City at night. The skyline was gorgeous, but the most noticeable thing was the giant tower with a huge ‘W’ on it.

“So, you are going to be working on the top floor of that building.”

Tatsu nodded. “She said I don’t have to be with her all the time, that I would be mostly for show, but I will take this job for what it is. I will protect her, regardless of if she needs it or not. I may not have to fight for her, but I will always fight beside her if she is in need.”

“That’s pretty cool. Maybe if I can get a legal gun and practice more I could be a bodyguard one day.”

Tatsu shook her head. “Your days of needing a gun on you at all times are over, Violet. You will not be a bodyguard. You will be a doctor, a lawyer, perhaps some profession that lets you work in a tower that tall.”

“I don’t think I’m smart enough for that.” Violet admitted.

“Yes, you are! You are highly intelligent, and you are a survivor. Look at what you have already overcome. You will get everything you deserve. Stop telling me what you can’t do and eat your fish eggs.”

Violet blushed at the praise then realized what she said. “This is fancy caviar. It isn’t fish eggs, Tatsu. It is a special spread that rich people use on crackers.”

The teen looked closely at the spread. “Oh God, these are fish eggs, aren’t they?”

“Straight from a sturgeon’s ovaries. Enjoy.” Tatsu replied, a small smile on her lips.

The next morning, Tatsu’s phone rang. It was Diana, asking if she and Violet would meet her downstairs in an hour. The two hurried to get ready and found her waiting for them on time.

“I am ready to begin.” Tatsu told her. “When can I start?”

“You aren’t even close to ready. You need a permanent place and a car. You also get to spend about four hours at Wayne Enterprises Human Resource Department. We have your work visa, and your citizenship papers are in the works. You have been legally named as Violet’s guardian, so your work visa covers her. An education specialist will arrive this afternoon to determine Violet’s level and what would be the best type of schooling for her. It is your decision of course Tatsu, but I think having a personal teacher under a home schooling program may be the way to go. She could work at her own pace.”

“Would she be able to get into college with that type of program?”

“Absolutely. In some ways, she can learn more with a dedicated teacher than she can in a classroom setting.” Diana informed them. “Nothing can stop you now, Violet, except you. You will be given every opportunity… do your best and everything will be available to you. But, before we get to that, we need to get you a home. It’s part of the package.

“Kara’s bodyguard, and your soon-to-be boss, John Diggle, lives at the manor, but something tells me you two will want your own space. Would you like to look at the apartments next door? There is a complex across from Wayne Tower for executives, but it is filling up fast. The only floors currently open are the bottom two and I was thinking you would enjoy something with a view.”

The trio walked across the street, taking in different units, all luxury units. Tatsu felt a bit strange, looking at places like this.

“I haven’t talked to anyone about prices.” She said to Diana quietly.

“I own them all. This, a car, the clothes, all part of your salary package. By the way, you make seven-hundred and fifty thousand dollars your first year and a million the year after that. John was hired at nearly the same price, but he earned himself a large bonus rather quickly and is family now. You will get increases every year.”

Violet had been listening and once Tatsu had slipped away to check out a bedroom, she asked Diana the main question she had wondered about.

“Why are you doing this?” she said quietly. “I am grateful, but I don’t want to see her hurt.”

Diana smiled and reached out, touching the teen’s cheek softly.

“I will protect her. I won’t let her get hurt.” Diana promised her. “You won’t lose anyone else.”

“Why her?” Violet asked again, not questioning why Diana was promising to protect her own bodyguard.

“Because I have need of her services and because… she reminds me of myself, and you remind me of my sister.” Diana said softly. “Do you believe in Fate, Violet?”

Violet shook her head.

“Trust me, Fate drives a hard bargain sometimes, and it puts us through hell at others, but some things are meant to be.” Diana told her. “You and Tatsu belong with me. I just know it. So relax. Pick a place you want to live… think about what color car you want and how difficult it will be for Tatsu to pick a sports car.

“Now go. She no doubt wants your opinion.”

Violet walked towards Tatsu then stopped. She turned back to Diana.

“Thank you.” Violet told her and rushed to hug her.

Diana was stunned at first but then smiled and hugged the girl back.

Violet let her go after a moment and ran after Tatsu.

“What do you think of this room?” Tatsu said. “The view is beautiful.”

“This is the biggest room. It fits you. I can see us living here.”

Tatsu smiled. “Yeah? I don’t need a room this big. I would be lost. This is your room. Does this feel right to you?”

Violet wiped a tear from her eye. “Yeah, it feels right.”

For the past three years, she and Tatsu had fought, bled, ran and attacked, won and lost, hunted and hid. It had been hell on both, and Violet knew if it weren’t for the woman next to her, the widow who had lost her son and husband yet still found it in her heart to love an orphan wholeheartedly, she would have been dead or worse.

Tatsu wrapped an arm around her shoulder. “It feels right to me as well. Welcome home, Violet.”
