Chapter 10:

About an hour later, while she was dancing, Leah suddenly started feeling ill. Riley, seeing that something was wrong, asked if she was alright.

Thinking it was the apple slice she consumed earlier, she told him, “I think it’s something I ate. I just need to get some fresh air.” The couple headed outside. Victoria and Mike, noticing something was wrong, also followed.

As soon as she saw Vicky, Leah leaned onto her. The vampire asked Mike and Riley to find their friends so they could take her home.

“I feel like throwing up.” Leah clutched her stomach in agony. Thinking she didn’t want to be embarrassed by throwing up in front of her date. Vicky quickly picked up her friend and carried her into the woods.

Leah tried, but she was unable to bring up anything. She continued dry heaving with sweat pouring down her face and back.

“We need to get you to a hospital,” Victoria said, gently rubbing her friend’s back.

“Oh, my back!” Leah cried as a sharp pain assaulted her suddenly. She leaned further into Vicky’s arms as she continued holding onto her for support. Tears streaming down her face, she said, “I feel like I’m going to die.”

“No, Leah, please! No! You can’t die,” the vampire wailed.

They heard the pattering of feet rushing to the scene. Edward, Jared, and Paul had scented them out in the woods. Jared and Paul immediately knew what was happening and urged Edward to take the non-supernaturals back to the high school.

“Leah!” Bella cried.

“Bella, help me!”

Just as Bella approached Leah, Edward grabbed her and pulled her to safety. Victoria punched him in the nose and brought her friend close to her. “Don’t you ever touch my friend!”

“I was just trying to help.” Edward attempted to explain to her that the humans were in mortal danger.

“Leah, what’s wrong?” Bella asked.

“I don’t know. I feel like I’m dying.”

Angela and Lauren also approached their friend. All five of them hovered over her. Leah suddenly wrapped her arms around herself and clutched her ribs. She balled up and rolled onto the forest floor. Paul and Jared took the opportunity to grab their imprints; Edward tried to do the same with Angela, but Mike Newton was standing in his way. He accidentally tackled both humans hard in his rush to get to his mate, injuring them grievously. This distracted both Victoria and Edward. Meanwhile, Riley was fiddling with his cell phone, so he could call 911. Unfortunately, the battery had gone dead on it.

And then everything happened all at once, Leah let out a bloodcurdling scream and suddenly transformed into a majestic gray wolf. Jared and Paul stripped their clothes off and changed into their wolf forms alongside the most recent wolf to help her.

Meanwhile, after assessing that both Angela and Mike were critically injured, Edward and Victoria administered bites to their mates, assuring that they would come back to life for eternity as their bonded mates. Much to Edward’s consternation, Vicky gave Angela some of her venom to cement their friendship.

A black wolf came trudging in from the forest with an angry expression on his face. He growled at Jared and Paul, and when he saw the vampires, he moved to attack. With a swiftness she didn’t know she possessed, Bella moved to stand in front of the vampires, shielding them from the black wolf.

“I am assuming you’re Sam Uley. If you hurt my friends, I will find a way to kill you. Trust me when I say I have well-placed friends who will do it for me.” Leah moved to stand next to her. Bella patted her friend on the back. Lauren went to her friend’s side and held her hand in solidarity, and then surprisingly, Riley approached, placing his left hand on Leah’s back.

Through their mind link, Jared and Paul informed Sam that if he hurt their imprints, they had no qualms about killing him even if he was their alpha. The black wolf immediately backed down and transformed back to his human form. Jared and Paul remained in their wolf forms in an attempt to help Leah return to herself.

“You know, I’m not so sure about this gray fur. I think we need to find a way to cover the grays,” Lauren noted. “What do you think about going all white? Or maybe silver?”

“Paul is silver. Look.”

“It just figures. It’s bad enough that guys usually have great hair, but do they have to have fabulous fur, too?”

“Leah is a powerful supernatural being, Lauren. She doesn’t need to worry about her fur color!”

“Bella, it matters. Appearance matters whether you’re a human, vampire, or wolf! You know, just because you don’t do girl well, doesn’t mean Leah doesn’t. She really takes care of herself.”

“She really does,” Riley agreed. “I’ve always thought she’s beautiful.”

And that did it. Leah finally transformed back to her human self. She turned to Riley and asked, “Do you really think I’m beautiful?”

“You’re the most beautiful woman in the world,” he whispered.

Gazing into his eyes, Leah felt invisible cables bonding Riley to her. She had no idea what was happening, but she felt complete with him, whole with him.

“Oh my God! Riley is your soulmate, Leah,” Bella exclaimed, happy for her friend. “You just imprinted on him. You looked exactly like Paul did when he imprinted on me!”

Paul changed back to his human form, handing Leah his shirt to put on so she could cover-up. “Well, Riley has already seen you naked, so you both got the formalities out of the way,” he joked.

“Can someone please tell me what’s going on? I’m so confused!” Sam Uley leaned up against a big oak tree and slumped to the ground, drawing his knees into him.

“That makes two of us,” Riley stated. “All I know is I feel more connected to Leah than ever.”

While everyone was explaining the events to Sam and Riley, Bella walked over to Victoria and Edward.

“I want to thank you, Isabella, for everything you did for me. I also want to apologize for the way I treated you. I won’t regret the time we had together, and I wish only the best for you. You are a unique young lady, and I know you’ll go far in life.” After a pause, Edward continued, “Tomorrow morning, there will be a major car accident in Forks; your friends will not have survived it. Their bodies will be replaced with stolen ones from the morgue. Be sure to grieve appropriately. Tell your friends.”

“I will, Edward. Angela’s car is parked at Lauren’s house. She’s supposed to be sleeping over.”

“Thank you for the information.”

“Take care of her, Edward. Promise me.”

“I promise with my life, Bella.”

She brushed the hair out of Angela’s eyes. “You’re going to be okay. Edward will take care of you per his usual overprotective self, and Vicky will be with you every step of the way. I swear to you, I’ll see you again after you gain control of your bloodlust. Nothing can break the bonds of friendship.

When she looked up, she had tears in her eyes. She hugged Victoria. “I’m going to miss you, but I’m glad you found your mate.”

“Bella Swan, I swore I would protect you forever, and I never break a promise. You are my first real friend.”

“And I will be your friend forever,” Bella promised.

She leaned over Mike. “You are going to love being a vampire. I can sense and feel it. Mikey, you were always a great guy, be good to Victoria, or I’ll have Emmett kick your ass.”

“And I’ll do it for you, too.”

Bella gasped when she caught sight of Emmett. She ran to him and gave him a hug. “I think I missed you more than anyone!”

The vampire hugged her back. “I missed you, Little Bear.” He ruffled the hair on top of her head. “I’m glad to see you’re okay. I was worried about you.” He caught sight of Paul, who had been shadowing his imprint. “But I know you’re going to be well taken care of now. I just came here to say goodbye to you properly this time.”

“Goodbye, Big Bear. Take care of my friends.”

“That’s a promise I intend to keep.”

The vampires soon left the area with their mates. Lauren grabbed the remains of Leah’s dress and her clutch purse off the forest floor. Bella found her bracelet. The leather on it was broken, but she planned on repairing it for her.

“What should we do now?” Riley asked.

It was decided that they would all meet back at Lauren’s house since it was where they were supposed to be. In the morning, they would all meet in La Push to discuss things because tonight had been the craziest Halloween night ever.
