Chapter 15: Back to Life
The morning after Alice signed her divorce papers, Edward finally awoke.
“What happened? Where am I?”
“You’re in the hospital. What do you remember?” Alice asked.
“I’m not sure… I remember us together at your place.”
“And?”
“Jasper came in… oh shit! Jasper caught us – in bed together!”
Alice solemnly nodded her head.
“He yelled and told us to get the hell out of his house. After you got dressed, you followed him out to the kitchen and I came out in time to see you hit the floor. He pushed you away so I attacked him but I tripped on something…?” he finished with a question.
“You hit your head on the counter top.”
“How long was I out for?”
“You came in on Friday; It’s now Wednesday.” Alice told him.
“Have you stayed with me this whole time?”
“Yeah.”
“Why didn’t you just go home to Jasper?”
“I don’t have a home with him anymore. I have nothing now!” Alice began sobbing.
“What do you mean you don’t have a home? And what about all the clothes you have?”
“Jasper filed for divorce after he got out of jail on Monday.”
“He was in Jail?”
“Yeah.”
“Because of us?”
“Yeah.”
“Aren’t you entitled to… I don’t know… half of all the marital assets or something like that?”
“No.”
“Why the hell not?” Edward was getting angry.
“I signed a prenuptial agreement before we got married. I forgot about it until the lawyer reminded me.”
“So that means…?”
“It means that everything that was purchased after we were married is all his since it was purchased with Whitlock money.”
“He doesn’t have his own money? What about your clothes? Your pictures?”
“No – it’s all family money. Withdrawals are all made from one account and each family member is issued a card. Once married, the spouse is issued their own card.”
“Well, you can get a cash advance with all the credit cards! Go take one out!”
“He canceled the card the day he filed for divorce so I can’t get at any of the money.”
“So what did he do with everything of yours?”
“His lawyer said it was all given away to Good Will.”
“Everything?”
“From what I understand, yes. He only kept the stuff in his office, and his Grandmother’s dining set.”
Alice once again broke down in tears mutter “I have nothing left” and “What am I gonna do now?” over and over.
“Come here, Pix.” Edward cooed to her.
Alice crawled up next to him on the bed, snuggling into his chest.
“It’s alright, I’ll take care of you now.”
Neither noticed that while they were speaking softly to one another, a Doctor had enter the room.
“Alice?”
Edward and Alice’s heads whipped towards the door.
“Daddy!”
“Alice – what are you doing here, sweetheart? Where is Jasper?”
Her tears appeared once again.
“We got a divorce 2 days ago. He kicked me out and gave all my stuff away!”
“But why are you here?”
“Daddy, this is my friend – Edward. He and Jasper got into a fight; Edward was hurt and ended up here.”
“Okay then, let’s check on your friend. I’m Doctor Cullen by the way, and if you haven’t figured it out yet – I’m also Alice’s father.”
“Hello, sir.” Edward said.
“I have a few question that we need to go over while I check your vitals.”
“Shoot, Doc.”
“Full name and date of birth, please?”
“Edward Andrew Mason, April 15th 1983.”
“Okay, how are you feeling, Edward?”
“Like I was run over by a mack truck.”
“I imagine so. It says on your chart that you hit your head on a marble counter top?”
“Yeah, that’s what I’ve been told.”
“You’re lucky to be alive, then. Most would have died from a blow to the head like that.”
“I have a really hard head, apparently.”
“Good thing, too”
Dr. Cullen then finished with his examination.
“Well, everything else looks good! If you have no complications over the next 24 hours, you should be able to go home tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Dr. Cullen.”
“Thank you, Daddy.”
Dr. Cullen left Edward’s room with more questions than answers. He couldn’t believe that Jasper would simply divorce Alice and kick her out. He had seen how in love they were with his own two eyes. And when exactly did Jasper get home?
He retreated into his office in search of his cell phone. He had Jasper’s number in there so he would simply call and find out exactly what had happened. Searching his contacts, he found the number he was looking for and pressed send. It rang twice before the operator picked up:
I’m sorry the number you are calling has been disconnected. If you feel you have reached this message in error, please hang up and try your call again. This is a recording.
Sighing in frustration, he closed his phone. After a minute or so, he finally thought of something – why not try Jasper’s brother, Peter? So once again he took out his phone and searched for the number. This time Peter’s voice mail picked up so he must be here at the hospital and has his phone off. He then picked up the phone on his desk and dialed Peter’s extension. Three rings later, someone picks up:
“Dr. Whitlock speaking.”
“Peter, this is Carlisle.”
“Hello, Carlisle – what can I do ya for?
“I just ran into Alice here at the hospital; she told me her and Jasper got a divorce?”
“Yes sir, that would be correct.”
“She was in a room with Edward Masen?”
“Sounds about right.”
“Cut the crap Peter, what the hell happened? One minute they are happily married and he is overseas – the next they are divorced and she is hanging all over this man in a hospital room?”
“Well, Jasper came home for good on Friday. Charlotte and I picked him up at the airport because Alice didn’t know he was coming home since he wanted to surprise her. Well, he was the one that got the surprise – your darling daughter was fucking Mr. Masen in my brother’s bed!” Peter’s voice had risen as he continued his rant.
“She what!?”
“Yeah and then Eddie boy attacked Jasper. They fought, he got hurt and Jasper was arrested. He filed for divorce on Monday, as soon as he got out of jail.”
“I’m sorry to hear all this. Jasper is a good man and my daughter was raised better then this. Her mother will be heartbroken!”
“Yeah, I bet – Jasper is a mess.”
“Do you have a number I can contact him at? His cell is disconnected and I would really like to speak with him.”
“Sure, Carlisle.”
Before the two men said their goodbyes, Peter gave him Jasper’s new number. Carlisle decided that he would wait till closer to lunch to call Jasper and hoped that they could meet in person. That would also give him time to let Esme know what is going on since she was supposed to go for lunch with Jasper’s mother this afternoon.
