The Differences Between Us Make Us Special

Chapter 28: Living in a dark and Endless Abyss

Edward had left. He was really gone. Isabella felt his hand caress her cheek, her pendant. She heard the words he had spoken. Edward was sorry. Sorry that he didn’t tell her about La Push, sorry he hurt her, sorry he was leaving her. Sorry… sorry… sorry… sorry… sorry… sorry… sorry… the word echoed around the dark abyss Isabella found herself in.

She couldn’t respond to his words, his touch. She was broken. The pain consuming her was more than any one person should ever have to bare. She scared him, she yelled at him, she made him run from her. The look of fear in his eyes replayed whenever she would close her eyes so she just stopped closing them.

She couldn’t hear Edward in her head anymore since he ran from her. She tried to send things to him but it seemed he couldn’t hear her either. This scared her even more. She had hurt him so much that they no longer shared that incredible bond that separated them from everyone else. She truly was alone now. She felt her heart within her chest shatter, what was left for her. Her only friend, her family was gone. She chased him away.

Vicky tried to bring her around, the doctor came and went. But still nothing. She wondered if Edward even missed her now that he was in La Push. Would he ever come back? What if he fell in love with someone out there? What if they got married? Had kids? She would be alone forever. She couldn’t handle the thoughts swirling around inside this dark place she now resided.

She used to find enjoyment in getting lost in her thoughts, but these thoughts were dark and scared her. Not even her books could save her here. She would love to place herself into the stories her books conveyed to her. Alice in wonderland was one of her favorites, but this was no wonderland! No definitely not wonderland. There was no dancing singing flowers, no silly creatures that resembled more of their title then what the real creature looked like. No caterpillar on a mushroom making her question who she was. No tea parties or rose gardens.

Here there was nothing. Darkness, all-consuming darkness. Not even time existed here. She had no idea how long she had been trapped in this place. It seemed to Isabella that she was getting more and more lost in here. No light at the end, no memories flashing like movies on a big screen, no loved one waiting to escort her to the other side. She was dying. She was positive about this.

She had no reason to go on. Edward was gone, off to find his place without her. Vicky had the orphanage to run and the children to care for. Her grandparents were both coming up in their years and who knows how much longer they would be around, Charlie and Renee would someday pull their heads out of their asses and have children of their own. No one would be left to miss her, she would be forgotten. A memory of a girl they all used to know but no longer had a place in their lives. Who would miss her?

This questioned cause a pain, a twisting heart wrenching pain to pulse through her. Someone would miss her, but who? Who is out there that would pine for and dwell on the one that they had lost? More and more questions flowed through the darkness now.

What is your favorite color? What is your favorite food? Are scary movies supposed to make you laugh? Favorite animal? Tell me about your family? Your brother? Your sister? How old are you? What color were your eyes? What type of music do you like? When do we get to meet? When are you coming to back to Forks? Why does time move to slowly?

These questions made her mind hurt…They were passed between her and someone else…a friend perhaps? Someone from the orphanage? Surely not. They would have already know these things. A name…she needed a name?

She was startled out of her thoughts by a presence filling the void around her. A voice soft as snow filtered through her ears…

“Isabella. I don’t know what has happened to you. I don’t know what Edward did or what he said to make you like this but you need to come back to me. I can’t do this without you. I love you as if you were my own child. I have watched you grow from a vibrant young girl into a beautiful young woman. I feel like your letting go. You can’t let go Isabella, you can’t. You need to fight this. Whatever it is. You need to come back. I know what Edward did was stupid. I know you love him and that you miss him terrible. He’s hurt. He misses you. He calls every day asking if anything has changed. I don’t know how to answer him.”

It was Vicky. She was crying.

“It’s only you and me now…because of your brilliant work and wonderful mind all the kids here have homes and family that loves them. They love you too…you should see the stack of mail at the end of your bed…perhaps I should read a few to you. Would you like that? Of course you would you love them too.”

Isabella could hear her riffling through what could only be hundreds of letters piled at the end of her bed.

“Okay Isabella here we go…first one.

Dear Isabella,

How are you? I’m well. My new family is awesome. I have my own room and an older brother I always wanted. We play football and other sports. I go to school every day and get good grades. We have a dog. A dog Isabella can you believe it. I always wanted one. His name is Reggie. He’s a big hairy beast, and slobbers all over everything, but I love him. He’s my best friend. Speaking of best friends, how’s Edward? You too always seemed more like best friends then brother and sister. I always hoped to have a big brother just like him and now I do..all because of you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Till next time.

I have enclosed a recent school picture for you to put on the boards outside the office.

Your friend,

Davey Andrews (Aka little D)

Oh Isabella you should see how much he has grown in a year. You would be so proud of him.”

It went on like this for several hours. When it sounded like she was about done she surprised Isabella with another letter.

“Isabella this one is post marked Forks.

Dearest Isabella,

I hope you are well. I have not received a letter from you as of late. I fear something has happened to you. I know we haven’t met yet but I feel as if I have known you all my life. I look forward to your letters and have been disappointed every time the mail is delivered and there is not one for me from you. What has happened? Perhaps I could help you with whatever it is?

I hope it is nothing I have said that has upset you to the point where you have decided that I was not worth your time. Please forgive me if it was? I hope you will find the time to write to me and let me know that you are well, and that nothing of the bad things that have run through my mind have happened to you. Ease my fears and let me know you are okay…Please Isabella.

Yours truly,

Jasper W. Whitlock

OH. This seems rather personal Isabella. I’m sorry if I crossed some line in reading it. I was only hoping to help you realize that you are loved and that we want you to return to us. Please. Please come back to us.”

Victoria’s sobs caused Isabella’s chest to ache. She felt she was letting everyone down. She didn’t know how to come back to them. She was trapped and couldn’t find her way out again. She screamed inside her head but like always no one would hear her. Edward used to be able to hear her. But he was gone, their link broken, along with her heart. He had lied to her, hid things from her and broke the only promise he ever made to her. He promised no one would ever hurt her, that he would protect her from harm. But he lied, he couldn’t protect her from himself. Again she screamed into the darkness.

Vicky stood and moved to leave the room. Isabella whimpered. Vicky spun around and stared at her a moment. Sure Isabella couldn’t speak. Her vocal cords were never fully formed but she could make small sounds. Whimpers, sighs, and the occasional moan of enjoyment, she just couldn’t form words. Vicky rushed back over to the bed.

“Isabella can you hear me?”

a soft whimper escaped yet again. Isabella was screaming inside her head. Glad to be able to at least let them know she wasn’t dead yet…that she was gonna try to fight to come back to them.

“OH Isabella honey. That’s right you fight…you come back to us. I’ll be right back, I have to call your grandparents. Let them know that you’re still in there. Edward is gonna cry when he hears this.”

At the sound of his name Isabella screamed inside herself again. He was the cause of this…he was the one who made her hurt this way…he was the one who made her loose herself…he was the one she wanted to come and hold her while she cried…he was the one she wanted to say sorry to..the one she needed to apologize to…the one she wanted to tell that it was her fault…the one she wanted to smack for hiding something so stupid from her, thinking she would be angry with him.

Again her thoughts clouded her mind. She was once again submersed into the darkness. When would it end? What helped bring her out of it? It was Vicky…she read her letters from those she loved. Those who loved her…Davey, Abby, Ellie, Shawna, Matthew, Joey…then Jasper.

Jasper…Jasper…she knew that name…that was not the name of one of the orphans here..how did she know that name? The questions from earlier sprung back up. Color? Food? Music? Animal? Siblings? Family?

She replayed the letter in her head that Vicky wrote.

Never met. Your letters. Sad. Upset. Disappointed. Looked forward too. Dearest. Yours truly…

He meant something to her. But what did he mean to her? He asked for forgiveness. What did he do? Did she do something? Something she did hurt this man? She was sure it was a man. He was upset, and disappointed. She did that to him…with her pettiness. By choosing to break down and close herself in instead of being strong and just letting what Edward did go…

Jasper…

Jasper…

Jasper…

Who was Jasper?

(E&B)

Edward had gone out and found Jacob and Paul on patrol. At first they were on guard until they realized who it was…Then the questions started. How did he find them? What was he doin out this late at night? Where was Sam? What did he want?

Edward began answering their questions. One at a time of course. Then he explained the conversation he had with Sam and Emily at the house. At first Paul shook and growled. Jacob told him to shut his mouth and hear Edward out. This went on for several hours. It wasn’t until just before dawn that Edward finally got back to Sam and Emily’s. He entered the now quiet house, and went straight to his room. Sleep took him quickly.

It seemed that time passed to fast for Edward and before he knew it Sam was waking him up and telling him to get around for work. Edward dresses in a hurry and makes his way down stairs to find breakfast and coffee waiting for him. An ache in his chest causes him to clench his hand over his chest. Emily ever the vigilant one saw and asked:

“Edward are you okay?”

“Yes, thank you Emily. It’s just the last time someone did something like this, it was my sister in front of the stove.”

“You really miss her don’t you?”

“I feel empty without her. It’s like part of me is missing.”

“It almost sounds as if you are imprinted to her…not her brother.”

“I know it sounds weird but that’s how it has always been. We have always been right there with each other. Now I’m here and she is half way across the country in pain and I have no idea how to make her better or what I did, right.”

“What you did?”

“Yes…I think a lot of what is wrong with my sister has something to do with the argument we had several weeks back. I had been keeping this job a secret from her. I thought she would be mad at me for wanting to leave so early without her. She was planning a huge party for my 18th birthday and me and Vicky’s graduation. I just thought she was busy…I didn’t know…”

Edward broke right there in front of Emily. She ran to him and wrapped her arms around him.

“OH Edward I’m sure it’s not your fault…”

“Yes…it is…i kept secrets from her and now I can’t hear her…she is blank to me…it hurts so much..” he continued to sob.

Sam came in the kitchen then. Emily looked at him with sad eyes. Sam nodded and left for work. Leaving Edward in the capable hands of his wife.

(E&B)

After his talk with Jasper, Carlisle ran off to make the unfortunate phone call to his friend. He wasn’t looking forward to this. He wasn’t sure how he would take the news. But he promised not to keep anything from him and that he would keep him informed on anything involving Edward and or Isabella. So taking off into the trees he gets about a mile out from the house and takes out his phone. It rings three times before the phone is answered.

“Hello Marcus speaking.”

“Marcus its Carlisle.”

“Carlisle dear friend, how are you? We haven’t heard from you in so long. How is the family? Your wife? The kids?”

Carlisle understood immediately what Marcus was saying. He wasn’t alone and couldn’t talk at the moment but wanted to know if everything was okay.

“The Family is well over all. Esmé is doin well she says to say hello. The kids well, what can I say: kids will be kids. Alice and Alec are settling well. Emmett and Rose…well let’s not get into detail about those two. My boy Jasper believes he has found his Mate finally.”

“Really! Carlisle that is great news. Who is the lucky lady?”

“A close friend of the family actually.” Carlisle stressed close.

“Oh. That is wonderful. Is that why you have called? You wish for me to come and record the mating?”

“Not just yet Marcus…there has been some trouble. She is young and feeling very stressed. Jasper being an empath is suffer greatly because of the state she is in. Her brother is worried about her. He will be here tomorrow to speak with us and have dinner.”

“That is just awful news Carlisle. I hope she gets better soon. It would be horrible if something happened to her, I wouldn’t want to be on the end of Jaspers wrath.”

“I said the same thing. So I will keep you informed. When the time comes we would love for you to come and prove the mating as well as perform the ceremony. I’m sure they will wish you to marry them.”

“Ah yes. I would be honored. Well I must be going, work to do and all that. Send my congratulations to Jasper. Give my pleasantries to the rest.”

“Same to you Marcus. I will call you when I have news on the new couple’s plans.”

“Goodbye my friend.”

“Goodbye.”

The call ended and Carlisle had a feeling that Marcus would be over to visit sooner rather than later. Heading back to the house he knew he had to find out more about Isabella’s condition from Edward.

(E&B)

Jasper paced in his study. He could still feel Isabella’s emotions, they were making it hard for him to concentrate on anything else. He knew something had to be done soon but he himself couldn’t make a move to help his mate till he found out what had happened from Edward. This is not how he expected the first meeting would go with the family’s new friends. He still had a few hours till Esmé and Carlisle expected Edward to be here for supper. His phone ringing brought him out of his stupor…

“Hello”

“Major what the hell is goin on? You sound like someone killed your puppy? What happened? Last time we talked you sounded so high I would have had to climb Mount Everest to even begin to attempt to reach you. Did something happen with your gir…”

Jaspers’ growl stopped Peter’s question.

“Sorry Major sore subject huh?”

“I don’t know what happened Peter. Everything was fine up until about two and a half weeks ago. Then I got this pain in my chest and have felt more depressed then I ever did back in the wars. I was confused as fuck in the beginning, but after a conversation with Carlisle we figured out why I was so out of sorts. The girl that had me high as a kite is my mate!”

“Holy shit. You sure?”

“I’m sure Pete. Everything I have been feeling lately is all her. It feels like hell. I have no idea what has happened. She ain’t returnin my letters, I can’t go see her…”

“Major what ya mean ya can’t go see her.”

“Peter I have yet to meet her. We have only talked through letters and I have heard her voice on the phone…but have never actually seen her yet.”

“Then how do you know she is your mate?”

“Her smell Peter…she smells like home…everything I remember from my childhood. My happiest memories flood back to me when I smell her scent all over the letters she sends.”

“Wow you got it bad don’t ya…”

“Shut it Peter. I don’t know what the hell is goin on with her but whatever it is I will fix it.”

“How will you find out?”

“Her brother will be here in a few hours and I will get the answers I need.”

“Her brother?”

“A long story for another time. Now I have to get ready… dinner is almost ready.”

“I’m not gonna ask…Talk to ya Later Jasper. Let us know if ya need us.”

“Will do Peter. Give Char my love.”

“No..i will give her my love. For you I will give her a hug.”

“Bastard…”

Peter chuckled as Jasper hung up on him. Jasper went and got a shower. He thought about what he was gonna say to Edward. He wanted to know what was goin on with Isabella and right now the only person who has any answers is hangin with a bunch of slobbery dogs on the reservation.

He heard the knock on the front door as he finished up his shower. It had to be Edward. Dressing and making his way slowly down the stairs, he could hear the voices coming from the living room.

“Ah Edward here is Jasper now.” Carlisle said as Jasper entered the living room.

When Jasper met Edwards’s eyes he could not only see the sorrow but feel it. He wondered what could have him looking and feeling this way.

“My sister.”

“Huh?”

“You wondered what could have me looking and feeling this way. My answer is my sister.”

Jasper just stood there stunned.

“I’m sorry Jasper I forgot to tell you about Edwards’s gift.”

Jasper just nodded but found a seat in the room opposite Edward. The rest of the family filtered in. Each finding a seat.

“Edward would you like to first fill the others in on you and Isabella before we get to the matter at hand.” Carlisle asked.

“Sure. Isabella and I are siblings. We are very special, at least that’s what everyone keeps telling us.”

“You are.” Esmé added. Edward smiled and nodded.

“When Isabella and I were young our father gave us up for adoption. He said he couldn’t deal with our ‘disabilities’, but the real reason was because he couldn’t stand the sight of Isabella anymore. He thought she looked too much like our mother and he blamed her for her death. He also knew that if he were to get rid of Isabella I would grow to hate him for takin away the only piece of my mother I had left. So he got rid of us both.

“When Isabella was 8 and I was 10 we finally got a family to take us in. The Duvall’s. They had a son James. He was evil and we didn’t like him from the start. He tried to rape Isabella. He didn’t get far ‘cause I heard his thoughts. Well they sent him for counseling. It didn’t help, he came home drunk from a party and proceeded to kill his parents. Isabella was with me in my room. We called the cops and he was taken away. He is probably out of the asylum now. He was only in there until he was 21. He vowed to kill me and take Isabella. Then three years later for Isabella’s birthday James sent her a doll that was all cut up and covered in blood. How he got it to her is unknown to us.

“Then our father was killed in a drunk driving accident. We met Aunt Renee and Uncle Charlie at the funeral. We spent two years talking and writing each other before we came out here last year. Then we met Carlisle. And we all know what happened last summer. We lost Mrs. Tanner. She owned the orphanage we live in and left everything to us. I think that’s everything.”

“Yes Edward I believe you covered the basics.”

Jasper sat growling lowly in his chair. Everyone heard him.

“Jasper son do you need a few minutes before we continue?” Carlisle asked.

“No Father I believe I should be fine. It just hurts.” Jasper said rubbing his chest.

“I understand. Edward would you like to continue or would you like me to take over from here?”

“Would you.”

“Sure thing Edward. So the summer that Edward and Isabella met me we had a discussion about what they are? I took some blood samples and ran some tests. Then I had them find out their mother’s maiden name so I could research their history since I already know all about the Masen’s. Once I received the name I called some of my contacts over in Italy and they searched the archives. What we found out from there is that Isabella and Edward are half vampire and half human. Their great however many grandfather is none other than Marcus Vultori.”

A gasp rang through the room. Everyone looked to Alec.

“Carlisle that can’t be possible.”

“I assure you Alec that it is possible. The proof sits right here in front of us.”

“Does Marcus know?”

“He does. He also knows now that Jasper is Isabella’s mate.”

Another gasp.

“Carlisle?” Edward asked.

“Yes Edward. We just figured it out the other day. Your sister is the Mate of Jasper. He feels her pain. He knows how she is feeling at this very moment.”

“Jasper is that true?” Edward asked.

“Yes Edward it is.”

“What is she feeling?”

“She is depressed. She is hurting, and is fading quickly.”

“Fading.”

“Dying.”

“NO she can’t die. I swear I didn’t mean it. I was stupid and scared. She hurt me too. What have I done…?” Edward broke down again for the second time that day. Esmé wrapped her arms around him and held him as he cried. Suddenly he grabbed his head and screamed. Jasper clutched his chest simultaneously. Whatever was goin on was effecting them both.

“Edward, Jasper what is it?” Carlisle asked.

“Isabella.” they both said.

“Edward we need to know what happened between you and Isabella.” Jasper gasped out.

“We fought. She got angry cause I was keeping this internship from her. I hid my thoughts. We have never kept secrets from each other. Then she started keepin hers from me as well. I confronted her and she scared the crap out of me. She truly looked evil. She reached for me and I ran from her. I think it hurt her more then I even know. I didn’t noticed that she had started withdrawing herself. She wouldn’t leave her room, eat, or sleep. Vicky was worried. I wasn’t until two days ago that I actually saw her for the first time in a couple weeks. I just thought she was busy with the party she was planning and writing letters to everyone.

“When I saw her I didn’t recognize her at all. She looked horrible, paler than normal, her blue eyes were gray, she had lost a ton of weight, her hair was so dried out I think if I would have touched it would have broken off in my fingertips. She shrunk away from my touch…i told how sorry I was and I told her about the internship and that I was leaving. I don’t know what is happening now…but I just heard her scream in my head. I haven’t been able to hear her for weeks. And now we are half a country apart and I hear her scream in my head. I can’t hear anything else right now…just her screaming.”

He clutched his head again, as he broke down into tears.

“I have to get to her…I can’t take this. I have to help her.” Jasper cried.

“Go. Please. Help her. I can’t. Please.” Edward begged through his tears.

Jasper jumped up from his spot on the floor. He stumbled to his room. Gathering a small bag of clothes and his phone he made his way back down stairs.

“Is there anything I should tell her?” Jasper asked Edward.

“Just that I’m sorry. I love her. And she needs to come back to us. You’ll understand what I mean when you see her. Tell Vicky I said you are angel.”

“Angel?”

“She’ll know what it means.”

“Okay I’m going. I’ll call when I get there and find out more.”

Jasper took off running. Just before he hit the tree line another blood curdling scream ripped through the night air from Edward. Jasper pushed himself faster. He was gonna save his mate. He was gonna see his Isabella for the first time in less then 24 hours.

(E&B)

Vicky had rushed to the office and picked up the phone. Dialing the Masen’s number quickly. She tapped her fingers on the desk while she waited for them to pick up. It rang and rang and rang. No answer. How was she gonna tell Edward that Isabella responded…then she thought. The Cullen’s. Isabella and Edward were always talking about them. They receive mail and packages from them all the time. They were in Forks, and from what they had said the Cullen’s lived literally across the street from the Masen’s. So Vicky started looking around their desks for a number.

It wasn’t until she had almost empty both desks on the floor that she noticed a number on the screen of Edward’s computer. It was the last call he had made. She remembered that conversation, the one he had with Carlisle she believed the man’s name was. So she dialed the number. It took a few minutes for someone to pick up and when they did the sigh of relief that left Vicky’s mouth would have been audible to even Edward.

“Hello Cullen residence this is Esmé speaking.”

“Yes Mrs Cullen this is Victoria. I run the orphanage in Chicago that Isabella and Edward live at.”

“Oh my, did something happen to Isabella? Is she alright? Did she…?”

Suddenly a different voice took over.

“Victoria was it? This is Carlisle Cullen or Dr. Cullen if you will. What can I do for you?”

“I have been trying to reach the Masen’s for over an hour. I have spent the day with Isabella. I’m sure you know of her condition by now, but anyway to make a long story short I got a small response out of her today. I don’t know what was so special about today or what I did that provoked it but I will do it every day if it brings her back to us…”

“Calm down Miss…”

“Please call me Vicky.”

“Ok Vicky. What did you do with Isabella today?”

“Well I had the doctor see her again today…I’m not sure why exactly it’s not like he can help her. I cleaned the rooms outside her door and played music for her. Then this afternoon I read her some of the letters that were stacked at the end of her bed. I thought it would help if she realized how many people would miss her if she just gave up. This went on most of the afternoon until about 2 hours ago. When I read a letter from forks. I got up and went to leave the room and she whimpered.”

“You said the letter was from Forks?”

“Yes from a Jasper W. Whitlock I believe.”

“Thank god. Vicky you have no idea how wonderful that news is.”

“So this is good?”

“Yes. This is great news. Jasper is one of my sons. He and Isabella have been exchanging letters for some time now. They would have met last summer but Isabella and Edward had to get back to see to Mrs. Tanner two days before he and his sister returned home.”

“I see. Do you have any idea how I can get a hold of Edward?”

“OH forgive me. I’m so sorry. Edward is here. He can hear us speaking I have you on speaker phone. He is very distraught at the moment over everything going on with Isabella.”

“Oh Edward. What are we gonna do?”

“Angel Vicky.”

“Angel? Really Edward? Are you sure.”

“Yes. I’m positive. Jasper is on his way to her right now. He will be there within the next few hours I believe.”

“Will he be able to help her Edward?”

“I think right now he will be the only one who can…that is if she isn’t to far gone and remembers who he is.”

“Okay Edward I will wait for him with Isabella.”

“Thank you Vicky. Give her my love will you.”

“Sure will Edward. I will get back to her now.”

“Thanks, good bye Vicky.”

“Good bye.”

Vicky went back to Isabella’s room and waited. She thought about what Edward had told her. The other half to Isabella’s soul was on its way to her now. On his way to bring her back to us. How much longer will it take?
