Chapter 17:
The restaurant had never had such good business in the past, and with one of the chef’s delivering the patrons meals to the table with a smile and a chipper attitude; the owner was sure that if he ever lost Bella that his business would suffer. Bella had been happy and chipper all week. Her emotions seemed to flow from her to everyone around her. No matter what kind of mood they were in before they came in contact with her, they left her presence wearing a smile and a slight pep in their step.
Jasper had already arrived in Chicago, but Bella had yet to see him. She was sure she could feel his presence warm the chill in the city air when his plane touched down. She wondered if he had changed his mind about really meeting her, but then shook it off. Alice was probably showing him all around the city first, and then would call to make sure Bella had a couple days off before bringing him over to see her. Alice had harassed her saying that she was sure once they met in person that they wouldn’t leave the bedroom for a few days at least. At first Bella was upset about it; but then thought that Alice may be right.
It was Thursday afternoon and the last day of work for Bella till Monday. The chef’s choice today was none other than linguini with clam sauce. The dish Jasper had cooked for her when they met in her cooking classroom so many months ago. Bella had but an hour left in her shift when an order came back for three chef’s specials. Whipping it together with perfect precision, Bella smiled as she plated it all. Handling the three plates like a pro, she placed a smile on her face and headed toward the dining room.
“Those go to table seven in the back chef.” the waitress called.
“Loud and clear Rena.”
Bella made her way to the back. She paused and her smile faltered only a second when she saw Alice and James sitting at the table. Placing the food down on the table she asked:
“So guys what brings you here? I thought you were gonna call?”
“Well we got hungry and wanted to get something to eat and I figured that this was as good a place as any.” Alice said with a smile. Noticing that Bella was glancing around the room subtly.
“Well it is actually the best place, as I work here.” Bella smiled.
“Right you are Bella. Now what is this we have here?” James asked, while sniffing the plate.
“That dear cousin is linguini with clam sauce. Ya would know that if ya paid any attention to what my ma tried to teach ya.”
Bella froze. Was it really him? Could he really be here? Here in the restaurant where she works?
Alice watched with rapt fascination as her friend seemed to be frozen in shock. She knew this would be great to see but now she wasn’t so sure. Bella seemed to lose herself. She actually looked like she might faint.
“Bella?” Alice called waving her hand slightly.
“Huh…” was her reply.
“You okay?”
“Huh yeah sorry. Thought I heard something is all.” Bella shook her head. She must have imagined it. “It’s linguini with white wine clam sauce. It goes great with a…”
“Red wine. And for dessert i would go for a chocolate mousse or rich chocolate cake. Ain’t that right Darlin’?”
Oh god there was that voice again. Bella was sure she wasn’t dreaming. Or daydreaming for that matter. Bella slowly reached up and pinched her arm to make sure. Alice giggled at Bella’s blatant denial of what she was hearing.
“Yes I would definitely pair it with either of those.” Bella said still not turning toward the voice.
Bella jumped slightly when she felt a pair of hands on her hips. A warm breath washed over her neck and a whisper in her ear made her shiver.
“Hello Darlin’”
Bella whimpered slightly.
“Jasper” was not but a whisper on the wind as it slithered from her lips.
“Are ya gonna turn around and greet me proper or are ya gonna stand there gapping at those two?” He said into her ear once again.
Bella slowly turned. As she made it to a complete stop she came eye to eye with a pair of sparkling sea blue eyes. The same eyes that have calmed her in her dreams for months now. Bella tentatively reached her fingers up to run them along his cheek. He closed his eyes when their skin made contact. A breath taking smile lite up his face. When he opened his eyes to meet her wide surprised ones; He couldn’t help but pull her to him. Bella melted into his embrace like she had done so many times in her dreams. She breathed him in deep. The honeysuckle, sunshine, leather and grass smell was all there. He was real, he was there, and she was in his arms. She pulled back slightly to look at him once more. Once the realization had finally sunk in that he was there; she squealed so loud that all the patrons looked in her direction. She didn’t seem to care. She threw herself into his arms even tighter wrapping her legs around his waist and fisting her hands into his hair. Their lips crashed together and it was like the rest of the world faded away. At least until all the cheers and wolf whistles broke into their bubble. She pulled herself away from the kiss and looked into his eyes and smiled.
“You’re really here?” she asked breathlessly.
“Told ya I was comin didn’t I?”
“Yes but why are you here in the restaurant? I thought we were meeting up tonight?”
“Alice said she thought it was a better idea to surprise ya.” Jasper told her.
Bella just realizing the position they were in unwound herself from Jasper. He chuckled as she straightened out her uniform.
“Well it is definitely a surprise.” Bella giggled.
“Not as surprising as the Chef’s special.” Jasper said.
Bella blushed ten shades of red.
“I’m not even going to ask.” said Alice as she dug into her food. She moaned. “God Bella this is delicious.”
“Thank you. I hope you boys feel the same. Now as much as I would love to join you I have to get back to work. I finish in half an hour.”
“We know. We will wait for you here. Could you bring out a red wine and some of that chocolate stuff Jasper mentioned?” James asked.
“Sure thing I’ll have Rena, who is your actual waitress bring it right over.”
Bella walked off as Jasper took his seat at the table. Bella blushed even brighter when she caught the stares of all the customers. She quickly rushed into the kitchen to tell Rena what to take to table seven.
