Chapter 14: Wedding Day Drama
The little dark-haired girl’s Alice. She’s really weird. And um, she’s with Jasper, the blond one who looks like he’s in pain.”
“Alice!”
Bella’s surprise was evident as she took in this new look. The look in her eyes however sent chills down her spine. Her former friend had left sane behind several exits ago. Almost on impulse she scanned the ballroom for Jasper’s pale form. No mate could be this long away from the other or so she had come to understand. Surely he could else level her emotions out again before something happened.
“Oh he’s not… here Bella”
Her hollow tone sent the fear up another notch in Bella system but she shook her head gently as Marcus wrapped one arm around her shoulders with a low snarl of warning that the pixie registered and slunk back tilting her head ever so slightly to the right in the pale imitation of a show of submission. As they were announced by the guard at the door and swept into the over flowing ball room Bella muttered a warning.
“Marcus something is wrong… she’s”
“Broken… Yes my brothers and I are aware Bella”
They knew? She was taken aback at this news and yet they still allowed her here?! What possible reason could they have for that. Her mind was off and running as a million possibilities ran ramshackle through her head as they made their way to the dais where another throne had appeared between Marcus and Aro and as she was announced and the crowd roared its approval she caught sight of Carlisle and Esme in the throng with Emmett in the back by the fountains.
“Breath little one… all will be well the Volturi must be able to show their ability to deal with the threats to their realm else others could get… ideas”
Aro had spoken in a low murmur but the edge of steel in his tone was enough to send a shiver down her spine The brothers where not known for mercy and yet like a giant trap they had all the pieces of a grand show right here. Caius had mentioned something about entertainment but she had dismissed it at the time now the pieces clicked as realization dawned and he nodded once.
This was both coronation and full score reckoning. A glance at Marcus and Caius revealed the same chilling gleam in their eyes looking for all the world like great cats waiting for the perfect moment to pounce.
It was not reassuring yet there was nothing to be done so she shrugged as a dish of food was placed at Marcus’s left and he proceeded to feed her by hand as tradition dictated the most delicious meal of tiny meat morels and cheese topped with a desert of chocolate mousse. When he had cleaned her chin and asked for the first dance Bella was lulled strangely into a sudden mellow mood and accepted quietly as the orchestra struck into a waltz and she was swept into the throng twirling in time with the rest thanks to the rigorous lessons by Caius in their spare moments the weeks before. She had lost count the time she had miss stepped and hit his toes outright but he never uttered a word of censure and merely arched an amused golden brow. The memory made her crack the first full smile of the evening as he cut in and took her for a turn about the floor. Marcus sliding over to offer Alice the same and they took their turn about the room Bella turned her attention back to her partner as he spoke.
“That’s better… my newest sister is not allowed to fret on her coronation day… I shall not allow it”
Her low laugh caused heads to turn in shock as the blond king chuckled along as she replied thinking of the art lessons and the teasing about tastes in the different generations. Hard to do with a vampire that had lived through well most of them.
“Then I shall do my best to oblige you brother… for today at least. I make no promised from tomorrow onwards”
“Dear Bella I would expect nothing less… little sisters are known to be trouble after all It is known”
“It is known!”
Several voices repeated the phrase about the ballroom with such fervor and she grinned guessing that they all had or still did possess a sibling. All of a sudden however the giant double doors closed with ominous foreboding in the crash as the dancer suddenly swept from the floor in the space it took her to blink she found herself back on her throne and Marcus held a suddenly silent Alice who’s hollow eyed expression she had seen on a mouse before a cat pounced as the same guard that had announced their entrance now spoke again in a ballroom that had fallen eerily silent save for the flowing of the fountains.
“Alice Cullen You stand accused of the murder of one Charlie Swan and the tribe he guarded 196 counts of willfully committed treason in total.
How do you plead?”
