The Magic Of Heartbreak

Chapter 04:

By the time Monday morning rolled around, Bella Swan couldn’t wait to see her friends. The sleepover on Saturday night had been a blast. She and her friends spent their time discussing the session with Kachina while baking cookies, doing their nails, and even sharing a bottle of strawberry-flavored wine that Lauren had managed to sneak from her house. It was a very normal sleepover by human teen standards, and Bella was determined to be a typical teen again.

It was ironic, before dating Edward, she had felt awkward amongst her peers. Then, she started dating Edward and felt accepted. In hindsight, though, that acceptance was by his vampire family only. Now, it was different. Bella felt as if she had made genuine friends. She had bonded with the girls during Kachina’s healing session. It was nice to have a bond. It was nice to have friends.

Bella climbed into her truck. She had started the engine a few minutes before to warm it up. She was about to back out of the driveway when the vehicle started making a strange rumbling noise, and then it started smoking from under the hood. Horrified, she turned the engine off and jumped out of the truck. She reached for her cell phone and called her father, who rushed home so he could drive her to school.

Of course, she didn’t make it to school on time, but her father had kindly walked her inside and explained the situation to Mrs. Cope, so her tardiness was excused. She waved goodbye to her dad, who said he’d pick her up from school at dismissal time. She really hoped her day would get better, but it turned out to be wishful thinking because her first class was math and the teacher decided to give the students a pop quiz.

During lunch, she sat with Angela and Lauren. The topic of discussion was the Fall Ball, which was coming up on Friday. Apparently, it was a massive thing because the kids from the tribal high school in La Push were invited along with any former graduates under the age of twenty-one from the area. It was a big thing in the community.

“Oh, cool. That means Leah can attend,” Bella noted.

“That’s right!” Lauren exclaimed. “I forgot about that. She graduated from the tribal high school last year. You know, Sam Uley, her ex, used to go to Forks High, don’t you?”

“I had no idea. He wasn’t here last year.”

“That’s because he suddenly left in the middle of the first semester. He was a star football player and everything. Do you remember Riley Biers?”

“Um, wasn’t he the quarterback of the football team?”

“Well, he was only made the quarterback after Sam Uley suddenly quit school. The football team was in an uproar. Riley was, too. He used to be really tight with Sam until he left without a word.”

“Weird.”

“Anyway, we are…”

Before Lauren could finish her sentence, Tyler Crowley and his goons, including Jessica Stanley, decided to taunt them. “So did the witch brew you girls a love potion?” They all started laughing at them.

“Why don’t you take a hike, Tyler?” Lauren said.

“Aw… My little ex-girlfriend is angry at me. Maybe you miss me. You know what you have to do to get back together with me.”

Bella became incensed. “What the fuck is your problem? Did we invite you to hang out with us at our table?”

“Oh-ho! Cullen’s ex is reborn from the dead and has become a wildcat. You want to take out your anger on me, girl?”

“Yeah, I would.” Bella nodded and slugged him across the chin, knocking Tyler out. “Damn, that felt good.”

“Oh my God! Tye-tye, are you okay?” Jessica wailed before turning to Bella. “How dare you hit my boyfriend, Bella Swan!”

“Oh, so, Tyler is your boyfriend now? I suppose the words friendship and loyalty mean nothing to you.”

“We were never friends, Bella Swan!” Jessica spat.

“I wasn’t talking about us, but you’re right; we were never friends. In fact, you’re the type of person who can never be friends with anyone.”

Mike Newton cheered for Bella. Jessica had broken his heart when she dumped him for Tyler Crowley without a word. After six months together, she had simply shown up to school one day and ignored him.

Of course, violence in a school was not without consequences, and Bella was hauled into the principal’s office, and her father called, while her two friends, plus Mike Newton, defended her actions, stating that Tyler and his crew were teasing the girls. As a result, both Bella and Tyler were given after school detention on Tuesday.

At 3:20 pm, Charlie Swan picked up his daughter from school. The first thing he asked her was, “Did it feel good knocking out that twerp?”

Bella broke into a smile after that. “It sure did, Dad.”

“Good, I’m proud of you for defending your friends. It might be a good idea to try and curtail the violence, but you were justified in this case. From what I heard, he and the Stanley girl were taunting you and your friends. Now, are you ready to take a ride with me?”

“Sure, I don’t have any homework except for a worksheet in chemistry.”

“Good. We’re going to Port Angeles, kiddo. I have to pick up a couple of things.”

“Cool. I’ve only wanted to walk around there. I’ve only ever been to the dress shop, the bookstore, and Bella Italia.”

“Well, you’ll be going to more places than that today.”

An hour later, father and daughter arrived in Port Angeles, where Charlie walked into a sporting goods store to pick up some new hunting boots. He insisted Bella purchase boots for the upcoming winter and a pair of sneakers for the school year. She looked down at her trusty, old Chucks and realized they were getting kind of worn out.

Her father’s next stop came as a surprise to Bella. He pulled into a car dealership. The owner rushed out as soon as he spotted them. “Charlie, is this your daughter?”

“It sure is, Ron. This is my Bella.” The man was older, maybe in his late sixties, with a full head of salt and pepper hair and a kind smile.

“Excellent. How are you, young lady?”

“I’m doing great.”

“You know, you look just like your Grandma Helen. She was a looker, just like you are.”

“You knew my grandmother?”

“I sure did. We went to high school together. She was a hellcat like you are. I heard you have quite a right hook?”

Bella’s eyes widened, and she turned to her father. Could the story of her knocking Tyler Crowley flat out have reached Port Angeles already? “Dad, did you tell him?”

“Of course, he didn’t,” Ron answered. “When a beautiful gal like you wallops the high school quarterback, word gets around. Jim Newton called me. He heard it from his grandson Mikey.” He chuckled. “Anyway, I heard you’re in the market for a new car. What are you looking for?”

Bella’s jaw dropped. “Dad?”

Charlie simply winked at her and then nodded towards the lot. “You need something to get you to and from school, don’t you?”

“I do, but…”

“But nothing, Bells. You need a reliable vehicle to drive.” She flew into his arms and gave him a hug. “Well, now, this makes it worth it.”

In the end, Bella ended up with a two-year-old Toyota Rav-4. Ron insisted it was the best vehicle on the lot because it had only one owner and very low mileage. Apparently, the owner could no longer drive due to health reasons. The dealer accepted Bella’s broken-down Chevy truck as an even trade and agreed to have the new vehicle delivered to the house in Forks when he picked up the old truck on Wednesday.

“I don’t understand,” Bella told her father when they got into his cruiser. How could an ancient truck be equivalent to the cost of a two year old SUV?

“Well, I did a bit of research, and that truck you were driving is an antique. Ron loves restoring antique vehicles. The fact that the engine still starts and the body has no damage makes it an excellent product for him. If he restores the truck to its former glory, he could make a good chunk of change off of it. I had no idea of its value when I bought the truck for five hundred bucks off Billy last year. I’m sure he didn’t either because people are selling the truck for about five-thousand-dollars just for parts and fully restored for over sixty-thousand dollars.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Nope, and since neither you nor I are going to be restoring that truck anytime soon, I contacted someone who I knew would be interested in it. Besides, I doubt the Crowleys would have given us a good deal on any vehicle after you flattened their kid, slugger.”

“Thanks, Daddy. I really appreciate you doing this for me.”

“Anytime, kiddo. Besides, I feel better knowing you have a safe, reliable vehicle. Why don’t we get some dinner before driving home? I feel like steak, how about you?”

“Sure thing! I love steak!”
