The Magic Of Heartbreak

Chapter 05:
On Tuesday, when Bella entered Forks High School, she was met with a round of applause and given several pats on the back for standing up to the popular bullies. Apparently, Bella was now Queen of the Nerds. After school, she served out her detention in the cafeteria, helping the lunch ladies prep food for the following day. She had no issues doing that. Tyler had to wash all the pots and pans, which was worse. After she served out her detention, the lunch ladies fed her a sandwich, a cookie, and chocolate milk because she did such a good job. When she left the school to look for her father, Leah was waiting for her in front of her car.
“Hey, Bella. I was told to pick you up and bring you to La Push.”
“Awesome. What’s going on?”
“Our dads had a huge haul of salmon on Sunday, so mom is grilling. The Blacks are coming over, too.”
“Cool. I just have to get some homework done.”
“I’ll help you. I did pretty well in school.”
“I meant to ask, what are you doing now?”
“I’m studying nursing at Peninsula.”
“Oh, wow! That’s a tough major. There’s so much science involved.”
“What are you going to do after high school?”
“You know, I haven’t given it a lot of thought yet. I know I have to go to Peninsula for my first two years before I transfer out-at least that’s the deal my parents and I made.”
“You’ll be going to school with me then. I’m so excited!”
“Yeah, that is pretty exciting,” Bella agreed. It would be nice to know someone in college.
They arrived in La Push and hit the books immediately. Later, they were sent on an errand to the tribal store by Sue. As they were about to walk into the store, a tall Quileute boy walked out carrying a gallon of milk.
“Leah?” He startled and then took a good look at Bella. “What the hell are you doing with her?” He said her as if she was a parasite.
“Bella happens to be my friend Sam Uley! How dare you? You don’t even know who she is!”
“I’ve met her before. She was on First Beach with her Hok’wat friends.”
Leah angrily put her arms on her hips. “You are a fucking racist. Now, get out of our way!”
“Hell, no! Not until you tell me what you’re doing with her!”
“Now, listen here, bucko! Leah doesn’t answer to you!” Bella cried.
“That’s right!” Leah nodded.
“Stay out of our personal business,” Sam hissed with a threatening expression on his face. Bella wasn’t fazed by it at all. She had dealt with James, after all-he was scary.
“You made it my business when you brought my name into it. I met you once in passing on First Beach. You were rude then, and you’re rude now. Now leave my friend alone.”
“Hey, now. What’s going on here?” An older man approached them from within the store.
Bella turned to him. “This person is harassing my friend, sir.”
“Ah, is that so?” The old man chuckled. “Samuel, go home and leave Leah alone. She is no longer your concern.”
Bella waved her hands up in the air. “Which is exactly what I told him! The nerve of some people.”
“Oh, Bella Swan, you’re a firecracker just like your grandmother was.” The old man started laughing. “How is your hand after you cracked the high school quarterback one?”
Bella glanced around and then up at the old man. “How did you hear about that?”
“You’re funny. Word gets around in a small town.” He extended his hand to shake hers. “I’m Quil Ateara the Third. Everyone calls me Old Quil. He looked curiously at Bella’s bracelet and then at Leah’s. “Oh, I see. How is Kachina doing anyway?”
The old man turned back to Sam and sternly said, “Shouldn’t you get that milk home to Emily?”
Sam reluctantly left. He looked like he had more to say but apparently decided against it.
Old Quil turned back to the girls. “I asked you how Kachina is doing?”
“How do you know Kachina?” Leah narrowed her eyes at him.
“Girl, how long have you lived on this reservation, and during this time, how long have I been shaman?”
“Oh, yeah. I forgot.”
“Sure, you did. So, you went to the Hoh Reservation to speak to their medicine woman instead of talking to me, did you? Was she helpful?”
“Yes, she was.”
“Good, I’m glad you went to her and got the answers you sought. I can tell your spirit has been renewed.” He turned to Bella. “Your spirit as well, young lady. I think the two of you are perfect friends. Now, what can I help you with?”
“Oh, Mom wants me to pick up two pounds of shrimp and some butter.”
He packaged up the shrimp and butter, and while Leah counted out the change, studied Bella. He suddenly came around the counter and reached for her wrist. Like Kachina did, he softly rubbed her scar from when James bit her. “Are you okay, child?”
“I… I am.”
“When did the cold one bite you? Was it the Cullen boy?”
Leah dropped her wallet at hearing that. “Old Quil, are you nuts? What is going on?”
“N… No, it was a nomadic vampire. The Cullens protected me from him.”
He looked earnestly at both girls, locked the door, and put the closed sign up.
“Tell me,” he ordered.
So, Bella explained how the Cullens were vampires. “Vampires need blood to survive. Most choose to partake of human blood, but the Cullens choose to feed from animals. I had been out on a date with Edward when we came across James and Laurent.” For some reason, she decided not to mention Victoria’s name. She didn’t want her to get into trouble. She told the old man the truth about Phoenix, about her awful break-up, and about finding the peace to put it all behind her after speaking to Kachina.
“Did Kachina see your scar?”
“Yes, she did.”
“What scar?” Leah asked.
Old Quil lifted Bella’s wrist and showed it to Leah.
“That’s a human bite mark. What kind of a sick bastard bit you?”
“It was a cold one-a vampire-that bit your friend, child. Now, let me tell you both a story.”
And then the old man delved into a story about how the Quileutes always had magic in their veins. He told the girls that certain male members of the tribe were descended from a warrior named Taha Aki. Those members turned into wolves when vampires were nearby for a prolonged period of time. Sam Uley became a wolf last year because he had been attending school with the Cullens. After he changed, two more boys transformed into wolves.
“This is my fault,” Bella said. “If I hadn’t dated Edward Cullen…”
“It is not your fault. You didn’t tell the Cullens to move here, and those boys changed long before you arrived in Forks. It was fate. And Leah needed to know because her life was affected by Samuel turning into a wolf. He didn’t want to leave you, Leah. He imprinted on Emily.”
“Imprinted? What does that mean?”
“Vampires and wolves have one essential thing in common-they have soulmates. While I have no knowledge of how a vampire finds his mate, a wolf finds his soulmate by looking into his mate’s eyes and imprinting on her. This is sheer chance and an infrequent occurrence. A wolf can look into the eyes of hundreds of thousands of women and never meet his imprint. In Sam’s case, he looked into Emily’s eyes and imprinted on her.” After a pause, he added. “It still does not excuse Sam nor Emily’s handling of the matter.”
“He’s still a jerk,” Bella contributed.
“So, it means Sam and I were never meant to be together?” Leah asked, smiling.
“Exactly. There’s no need to waste any more tears on Samuel.”
“Oh, good, because I think I’m meant for better.”
“As do I, Leah.”
“Now, I threw in an extra pound of shrimp. You can tell your mother I’m coming over for dinner with my grandson. The story I told you stays between the three of us for now, understand?”
“Understood.” Both girls waved before leaving the store.
After walking in silence for a while, Bella asked Leah, “Are you going to stop being my friend for dating a vampire?”
Leah stopped walking and gave her friend a hug. “No, silly. I dated a guy who morphs into a wolf. Now we have one more thing to bond us.”
“Right, so now might be a good time for me to tell you that Victoria is a vampire.”
“No, sir! Is she really? I thought the candles were making her eyes look red.”
“No, she’s a vampire.”
“Well, she’s pretty cool.”
“I think so, too.”
They both giggled heartily and often as they skipped merrily back to the Clearwater home together.
Bella had a surprise waiting for her when she and her father arrived home after dinner. Her new SUV had been delivered a day early. Apparently, it was the reason Charlie couldn’t pick her up from school. Because of this, she was able to drive herself to school on Wednesday.
When she arrived at school, Lauren approached her as she got out of her vehicle. “Oh my God! This is so nice. I love your new SUV!” She waited for Bella to grab her stuff and lock it up. “So, we need to talk.”
“About what? By the way, I saw Leah yesterday. She said she’ll go to the dance.”
“Good. That’s part of what I wanted to talk to you about. We need to go shopping.”
“Shopping?”
“For clothes, obviously. We have to figure out what to wear, and…” Lauren paused for a second. “I need you to come to the New Age store in Port Angeles with me.”
“For what?”
“Okay, so you know how Kachina helped us to put our past behind us and empowered us?”
“I don’t think it was magical empowerment she gave us, Lauren.”
“I know that! It’s just that I thought that we could explore new possibilities, so I kind of need supplies so we can cast a spell to find our soulmates.”
“And where exactly did you find this spell?” Bella asked, crossing her arms in front of her chest and tapping her toe.
“I found it on YouTube, silly.”
“You found a spell on YouTube?”
“Yeah, and we’re going to give it a whirl because we deserve to be loved.”
“Lauren, did you get anything out of our time with Kachina?”
“Oh, sure. I have put Tyler firmly behind me.” As soon as she mentioned his name, the jerk pulled into his stall. He got out of his Nissan Sentra and then walked to the passenger side to open the door for Jessica, who was now dating him. As soon as he caught sight of Bella and Lauren, he planted a big kiss on his girlfriend’s lips.
Bella and Lauren simply rolled their eyes and continued their discussion.
“I guess there’s no friend loyalty on her part,” Bella noted.
Lauren shook her head in disgust. “I don’t think we can count her as a friend, do you?”
“No, not really. Now that I think about it, she’s only ever been jealous or snippy.” Bella shrugged her shoulders. Thinking that a spell Lauren found on YouTube couldn’t hurt, she agreed to tag along with her to Port Angeles, “Okay, I’ll go to the New Age store with you.”
“Good! And we’ll test out your car.”
