The Magic Of Heartbreak

Chapter 08:

At around 4pm on Friday, the girls arrived at Lauren’s house to get ready for the dance. They immediately climbed the stairs to her room. Her room was large and airy, twice the size of Bella’s room. She had a dresser right by the door, a vanity where she could do her hair and make-up, and a desk to study on. The walls were painted in a cheery light blue, but the rest of the room was white. The window was open, letting in a cool breeze.

Looking around her friend’s room, Bella realized it was time to redecorate her own. Compared to this one, her room was too dark and depressing. The furniture had not been changed since she was a little girl either. She would have to talk to her father about making a change. A fresh coat of paint would dramatically refresh the look.

Lauren, and surprisingly, Victoria volunteered to do everyone’s hair. Victoria said she had been trained to style hair at a brothel when she was still human. She was able to style Lauren’s hair into an elaborate up-do. She chose a half-up, half-down style for Angela.

Lauren used a straightening iron on Leah, so her beautiful angled bob looked sleek and defined. She then braided Victoria’s hair pinned the braids up into a bun.

“I’ve never had anyone do my hair before. This is so nice,” the vampire said.

“I’ll do your hair anytime you’d like. Now, where’s Bella?”

Bella, in fact, was taking a nap on Lauren’s bed. She was fast asleep, not even thinking about the dance. The last few days had been stressful for her, and she was exhausted.

“Wake up, Bella!” Lauren demanded. When her friend didn’t budge, she sprayed some water on her using a mister.

“I’m up! Oh my God! You didn’t have to get me wet.”

“Stop whining; it’s a facial mister. It’s good for you. Sit in the chair so we can do your hair and make-up. Where’s your make-up?”

“Uh…” Bella reached into her tote bag and handed Lauren a clear plastic Ziplock bag.

“You’re kidding me?”

“That’s all the make-up I own.” She sighed. “Well, it’s not entirely true. I used to have powder, but I don’t know what happened to it. I think I left it at the Cullen’s.

“How come Victoria, who is a vampire, has an entire bag filled with make-up, and you only have lip balm, a tube of mascara, and eyeliner?”

“I never really got into make-up, that’s why.”

“Sit!” Lauren ordered and started working on her hair. “Oh my God! Have you ever heard of a hairbrush?”

“No, she hasn’t. I haven’t seen her brush her hair once in the two days I’ve been at her house. She washes it, waits for it to dry, and throws it in a ponytail. Frankly, I was appalled,” Victoria admitted.

“What kind of a friend are you, Vicky? You’re ratting me out to the beauty queen here.”

“Trust me, I am not the beauty queen; you are. I’m going to charge Vicky with brushing your hair every night.” Lauren teased the crown of her hair, then ran a curling iron through it, enhancing Bella’s natural waves. “What do you think?” she asked Victoria.

“I think she looks beautiful.”

“I do, too.” Lauren applied a bit of eyeshadow and blush, then used Bella’s mascara, liner, and lip balm to complete the look. “At least it’s tinted lip balm.” She sighed. “I will teach you how to do girl, if it’s the last thing I do.”

“Thanks, Lauren.” Bella gave her a hug.

“Aww, it was nothing. Now, let’s do the spell.”

“What spell?” Angela, Leah, and Victoria asked.

“We are going to try and cast a love spell, so we find our one true love.”

“Cool. I’m in,” Leah instantly agreed.

“Um, I’m not so sure it’s a good idea to mess with black magic.” Angela looked uncomfortable and started fidgeting where she was sitting.

“You’re okay with Victoria being a vampire, but not with an itty-bitty spell?”

“She got it off of YouTube,” Bella cut in. “It involves an apple, honey, and some other stuff.”

“YouTube?” Angela’s countenance completely changed. “Oh, well, if that’s the case. Let’s get to it then.” She figured it couldn’t be a real spell if it was found on YouTube.

“Wait a minute!” Victoria put her hand over her heart. “I don’t know if I can condone witchcraft. It’s sacrilege, against the law, and punishable by death.”

“Are you kidding me?” Bella gawked at the vampire. Thinking about the stolen suitcase, she commented, “I’m sure you’ve done worse.”

“You have a point there.”

“Besides, what if it reveals Mike Newton is your soulmate?”

“That nice boy.”

“Yes, that nice boy.” Bella had no idea what the vampire saw in Mike, but she supposed after a century with the abusive James, a devoted boy, was a refreshing change.

“I thought you’d say that.” Lauren opened the window to air out her room, then reached for a tray she had sitting on her dresser. She fished an apple out of her school backpack. “I grabbed this from the cafeteria during lunch. This is a sacred apple.”

“How the heck is that apple sacred? You just said you took it from the school cafeteria.”

“Bella, just go with it. Imagine the fucking apple is sacred!” Lauren instructed everyone to sit in a circle around the tray. She sliced the apple into five wedges. “These are edible rose petals. I had to go all the way to Port Angeles with Bella to buy them.” She sprinkled them on the apple slices.

“You forgot to light the candle,” Bella reminded her.

“Oh, yeah.” She lit a red candle.

“As I was saying, these are edible rose petals. Red roses are a symbol of love and passion. I sprinkled the rose petals on the apple and will now drizzle them with honey to bring us love, affection, happiness, and joy.” She reached for a small bowl of herbs. “This is oregano, rosemary, basil, and cinnamon. These herbs will protect us from evil forces and bring love and positivity our way, attracting the good, and warding off evil.” She sprinkled the herbs onto the lit candle three times, then instructed everyone to hold hands. “I want you to visualize your soulmate coming to you, and then repeat after me. ‘By the light of the full moon, I call on thee to bring to me my destiny. Winds of love, come to me, bring my soulmate, I decree, this I wish, so mote it be.’ And now we each have to have an apple slice.”

As they bit into their apples, the wind suddenly shifted directions, momentarily becoming more forceful as it gusted in through the window, blowing the candle out.

“Well, that was spooky,” Bella commented. It was what every single girl was thinking; the blowing wind was just a little too coincidental, especially with the light of the full moon shining prominently into Lauren’s room.
